Ruth Elizabeth Brown, 90, a resident of Otsego Manor passed away, Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Otsego Manor. She was born in Newark, New Jersey, on June 3, 1921, the first child of Oscar W. Brown and Sara Nunemaker Brown. Ruth was a graduate of Alma White College in Bound Brook, New Jersey, and received her Master's Degree from Columbia University. She was a much respected and loved teacher of French and Latin and was the chair of the Language Department at Rahway Senior High School in Rahway, New Jersey. Ruth Elizabeth Brown, 90, a resident of Otsego Manor passed away, Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Otsego Manor. She was born in Newark, New Jersey, on June 3, 1921, the first child of Oscar W. Brown and Sara Nunemaker Brown.
Ruth was a graduate of Alma White College in Bound Brook, New Jersey, and received her Master's Degree from Columbia University.
She was a much respected and loved teacher of French and Latin and was the chair of the Language Department at Rahway Senior High School in Rahway, New Jersey. Many of her students stayed in contact with her throughout her life.
In 1984, Ruth retired to Otego, New York, where she continued teaching and private tutoring for twenty years, including assisting in the home-schooling of two of her nieces and a nephew.
Ruth was instrumental in the founding of Oneonta Community Christian School, where she taught and served on its first Board of Directors.
She moved to the Otsego Manor, which became her home thanks to the exceptional care and kindness of the management, staff and other residents, and the attentive loving care of Catskill Area Hospice, both at home and at the Otsego Manor. Her family is deeply grateful to each person involved in Ruth's care.
Ruth continued her life-long love of teaching and leading Bible Studies throughout her residence at the Otsego Manor up until two weeks before her passing.
Ruth was predeceased by her brothers, Ralph W. Brown, of Otego, New York, and Robert N. Brown, of Scotch Plains, New Jersey.
Ruth is survived by her sisters-in-law, Arlene R. Brown, of Otego, New York, and Freda Brown of Scotch Plains, New Jersey; nieces, Jane Seitz, with whom she lived for twenty-five years, Faye Hake, and Barbara Keteyian; nephews, Jerry Brown, Glen Brown, James Brown, and Paul Brown, and their families, including great-nephews and great-nieces, great-great nephews and great-great nieces, all of whom consider it a privilege to have known and loved their Aunt Ruth.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2012 in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River Street, Otego from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Phil Livermore officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ruth's name to the Otsego Manor, 128 Phoenix Mills Crossroad, Cooperstown, New York 13326.
