Ruth Lail Townsend, 85, passed away unexpectedly at her residence Monday, June 2, 2014. Ruth was born Oct. 23, 1928, in Catawba County, to the late Loy Edger and Rosie Lea Ennis Lail. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Townsend and her companion, Glenn Simmons; a son, Martin Luther Lail; daughter, Vickie Lynn Townsend; and great-granddaughter, Ashley Rayanne Spann. Surviving are sons, Michael Townsend and wife, Debbie, of Connelly Springs, Larry Townsend and wife, Audrey, of Denver, Bobby Townsend and wife, Gwen, of Dudley Shoals and Gary Townsend, of George Hildebran; daughters, Janice Arlene Spann and husband, Bobby, of Hickory, Anita Parker and husband, Lanny, of Hickory, Renae Helms and companion, Robbie Langford, of Taylorsville and Susan Roop and companion, Nathan Gilbert, of Lenoir; 19 grandchildren, including a granddaughter, Amy Wilson, who was her special care giver for many years; 19 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grand-children. Services will be held Friday, June 6, at 3 p.m. at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hickory Funeral Home. Condolences may be made online at www. hickoryfh.com. Hickory Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
