Ruth Wismer
August 29 1926- September 8 2014
Ruth Wismer (formerly Wilson, nee Martin) died peacefully September 8, just ten days after her 88th birthday, at Bayhaven Senior Care Community, Collingwood Ontario. Ruth was a delight to the end of life to family and health care staff with her wry sense of humour, intelligence, grace and interest in others. Ruth met her first husband, Harry Wismer, at graduate school. During 53 years of marriage, they raised daughter Susan and son Don, enjoyed summer camping in Algonquin Park and across Canada visiting far-flung relatives, lived in Winnipeg, Cobourg, Toronto and eventually retired to Sidney B.C. Professionally, her years as Director of Counselling at York University's Glendon College were especially rewarding. After Harry's passing, Mom was fortunate to marry Douglas Wilson. They shared 9 years of love, laughter and lively conversation until Doug's death in 2013. During the last year of her life, she returned to Ontario be closer to her children.
Ruth will be missed by family, friends, and the many people whose lives were touched by her compassionate ear, her creative mind, and her courageous optimism. As she desired, her cremation will be followed with a private family celebration. For those of you who would like to celebrate Mom's life and honour her sustaining passions with us, we invite you to take a few moments for a quiet walk in a garden or the woods, listen to a favourite piece of music, give a small child your undivided attention, write a letter to a friend. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favourite charity.

I offer my deep condolences to the extended family of Ruth Wismer. I was blessed to know her when I was a young undergraduate student at Glendon College in the 1960s. She was an exceptionally kind, thoughtful and wise counsellor whose enlightened optimism greatly helped me and many other students. I am not sure I would have made it through my challenging undergraduate years without her ongoing extraordinary support. For a number of years as a graduate student and then as a professor, I would endeavor to correspond or visit her on Vancouver Island. Sadly I had not been there for some time and we lost contact. Even to this day, Ruth Wismer remains one of the most influential inspiring persons in my life. I will always be grateful to have been blessed by her presence. Take care.

Hi Sue;
So sorry to hear of your loss of your mother's physical presence. Nice to hear of her time in B.C. and of her meeting Douglas Wilson following your dad's passing. I hope that all is well with you. Take care. Best wishes. Rusty (Baillie)

To Ruth Wismer's family, I extend my sincere condolences. I first met Mrs. Wismer at Glendon College in 1975. Although we didn't keep in touch over the years after I left Glendon two years later, I clearly remember her pleasant smile and helpful advice.
