Sally Mandel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 18, 2017.

Sally Mandel (nee Ryder), of Short Hills, passed away at home on June 12, 2017, of hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC), surrounded by close family members. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Robert, daughters Lauren and Maxine, and siblings Suzie and Christopher. A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, June 23, 2017 at Somerset Hills Memorial Park Chapel, 95 Mt Airy Road, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial gathering at 10:00 a.m., with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m.

Born on October 21, 1962 in Gateshead, England, Sally was a graduate of Roedean School and of Leeds University, where she was President of the Student Union and gained a BA Hons in Economics. She first travelled to the United States in 1980 as an ESU Scholar, spending a year at Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She returned to the US a few years later, transferring her job in London with Barclays Bank International to New York. Married to Bob in 1989, they moved to Chicago where she continued her career in banking with Bank of Tokyo, before starting a family. During this period, she resumed her studies, gaining an MBA from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Bob, Sally and daughters Lauren and Maxine have made Short Hills NJ their home for the last 12 years. Sally will be remembered for her great sense of fun and adventure, her loving and caring nature, her ideas and energy and, latterly, her courage and strength in facing her illness. Ever self-effacing, she would have been surprised to learn how much of an inspiration she was to so many of those who knew her, how much she will be missed and how many happy memories of her we fondly cherish. We thank her for having been and continuing to be in our lives.

In lieu of flowers, Sally asked that donations be made to her favourite charity - Debbie's Dream Foundation https://www.debbiesdream.org/portal/secure-donate-now. Messages of condolence are being collected at: www.dignitymemorial.com.
