Salvador Leal passed away in his sleep on the night of May 16th, 2017 at the VA Hospital in San Diego, California. He was 96 years old. He was born in 1920 in Los Angeles, California to Genaro and Maria Leal. As a boy he was given the nickname "Chivie" for his job as a goatherd. He held jobs from a young age. As a young adult, he enjoyed southern California nightlife, frequenting nightclubs and ballrooms with his close friends. He married the former Virginia Garcia, his wife of 60 years, in 1940. During World War II, he joined the United States Navy and served as a gunner's mate in the South Pacific. After an honorable discharge, he worked for many years in metal casting. He spent several years at Beals Castings, Inc. in Ontario. He was the father of two sons Lawrence and Salvador Jr. He maintained his love for the outdoors into his later years. He grew fruits and vegetables as well as rabbits in his large backyard in South Ontario. He is survived by his son Salvador, Jr., seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren. He was a man with an infectious love of life. He always said what he meant and meant what he said. He was beloved by many. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 24 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at Draper Mortuary 811 Mountain Ave., Ontario. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 25th at 10:30AM at Bellevue Cemetery in Ontario in the Veterans' section. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to woundedwarriorproject.org.
