Sam H. Waters passed away at home on May 5, 2014, while surrounded by his loving family after a courageous two year battle with colon cancer. Sam was born on April 11, 1944 and grew up in Ft. Pierce, Florida. He grew up on the Ft. Pierce Inlet where his parents owned The Waters Apartments on Seaway Drive. He spent his childhood fishing and camping on the Indian River. He attended Dan McCarty High School class of 1961. He joined the U.S. Navy right after high school and trained in Great Lakes, IL. He was stationed at Patuxent River, Maryland where he was a machinist mate, before shipping out on the USS Constellation CV-64. The Connie was deployed to the Cuban waters during the Cuban missile crisis. He loved his country deeply and respected the flag and all it stood for; he was a patriot for all his life. After his honorable discharge in 1964, he returned to Ft. Pierce to work in the family business, Thurman's Gas & Oil on North U.S. #1. During this time he enjoyed stock car racing with his brother, Denny and friends. They would often buy cheap junk cars and race through the woods in the mostly unpopulated area of North Ft. Pierce. He also enjoyed motorcycle racing and was never afraid to try anything dangerous. Sam was one of the colorful characters of early Ft. Pierce and was well known and loved by many for his wild and funny antics. To his father's relief, he settled down some and bought the business from his father and diversified the business by opening two car washes and a side line of selling storage sheds and truck tops which became the main business. Thurman's became a household name for integrity and honesty in business practice.
He was a hard working and fun loving man throughout his entire life. Even when Hospice was called in, he continued to work, he continued riding his Harley, and mowing and maintain the 10 acres of his beloved homestead up until the month before his death. He never gave in to the pain of the cancer. He kept living his life, his way. He will be sorely missed by family and friends alike.
He was preceded in death by his parents Thurman E. and Katherine C. Waters and his older brother Denton (Denny) Waters.
Sam is survived by his loving wife of 22 years Yvonne (Vonnie) Waters, his son Michael Waters and his daughters Angie Waters, Kathy Heaton (Lonnie) and Camille Ricord all from Florida, step-sons Eddie Stanton from Louisiana, Robert Brock and Daniel Robertson (Brenda) of Indiana. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and his sisters Eileen Jones and Nan Davis (Ray), from Ohio, and his beloved niece Sue Jones (Tom Randolph), who shared his passion for NASCAR, also from Ohio.
Sam was a member of the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and, Moose Lodge 248.
Donations may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice or the Humane Society
