I was thinking of Sam last night and decided to google his name and just found out that he passed away. He was my mentor and was a positive influence in my life. I worked for Sam at the Centerville Branch Post Office until he retired and then I took over the office for him. I am sorry to hear of his passing and know that God has another golfer with him. Love ya Sam and you will be missed.

It will be three weeks tomorrow that my dad passed away. I have been touched and amazed with the outpouring of love and concern since his death. I think almost anyone who has a lost a parent reflects on the legacy he/she left behind. I have relived so many memories of Sam Mathis in my mind, from my earliest memories to the final conversation we had just days before his death. And in the end, I will remember him as a warm-hearted, down-to-earth, affable man who won hundreds of friends with his sense of humor, willingness to help others and humility. I hope I can draw from his legacy. So many people came to my dad's funeral, and I didn't get to thank all of them. I will thank them here instead. And, when I reflect on Sam Mathis, I will remember a quote I read once that always stuck with me on how to live your life, "Think about what you want people to say at your funeral, then work backwards!" My heartfelt gratitude to all of those who supported my mom and dad throughout his illness, and who showed up in a big way when he passed away.

Enjoyed morning chats with Sam the past few years at McDonald's and seeing him at the golf course as well. Sam was a fine man and I miss seeing his red truck with the "Sampa" tag in the mornings. Sam loved life to the fullest and his folksy tales will always be good memories. He will missed by many.

We called him Horace in school, but much later in life, maybe after his army days, he wanted everyone to call him, "Sam," and so we did. Sam was, in my opinion, the very best athlete in our high school class, who never played on a school team. He would have excelled in several sports, particularly baseball and golf. But Sam, perhaps out of necessity, chose to get himself a job and work after school, rather than go out for a school team. Later, Sam became one of Tallahassee's best slow pitch softball players, and one of the best amateur golfers in the Big Bend area. He could hit a softball out of the park easily, and blast a tee shot almost three hundred yards whenever the mood struck him. He played golf on a regular basis and shot many rounds in the high sixties and low seventies. Aside from his athletic prowess, Sam Mathis was a fine man, a complete gentleman, a good husband, a good father and grandfather. He would give anyone the shirt off his back, and never met a stranger. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. My sincere condolences to Doris, her children and grandchildren. Sam Mathis will be missed.

Doris-Sam was a wonderful person. I never saw him have a "Down Day" before his illness. May God be with you during this sad period in your and the kids lives.

Sam was the wonderful husband of my lifelong friend, Doris. We'll remember him for his kind and caring manner and steadfast nature, his love of family, his quick wit and sense of humor, and, among many other things, his great talent for making things around him beautiful. He will be greatly missed but we take comfort in knowing that we'll see him again where he's saving a seat for Doris in that beautiful Heavenly garden. Sam, save one for us nearby.
Our love and prayers to Doris and family,
Frankie and David Drake

I had the pleasure of living next door to Sam and his beautiful wife Doris for 5 years. Sam was the best neighbor in the world. He was always willing to offer his help, expertise in everything from flowers to repairing lawn mowers and loan his tools. He always had a smile and a funny story to share. I know all who knew him have lost a wonderful soul but I am sure he is making heavens gardens even more beautiful today.
