Samuel Vaccaro Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2017.

Samuel "Sam" Michael Vaccaro, 93, of Reading, passed away Wednesday morning, August 2, 2017 at the Villa St. Elizabeth, Wyomissing where he was a resident. He was a husband of the late Regina L. (Kalina) Vaccaro. Sadly, Regina passed in 1997.

Born in Reading on August 28, 1923, he was one of six children of Angelo and Michalina (Bruno) Vaccaro.

Shortly after the start of WWII, Sam and his three brothers enlisted in the military. As a Machinist Mate, he sailed aboard Destroyers, first in the European Theater and later in the Pacific in the Battle of Leyete Gulf, the largest naval battle in the war. He was a proud Naval Veteran having served his country during the war.

After the war, Sam worked for the Reading Railroad and later in the melting department at Carpenter Technology where he retired in 1985. He then worked part-time until the age of 85, maintaining the landscape at City Park.

Sam's hobbies were woodworking and painting artistically what he built. He especially enjoyed painting Disney characters on toy boxes that he made for children of family and friends.

Sam was a generous man with a great sense of humor who loved being surrounded by family and friends.

Sam was the loving father of two children: son, John M. Vaccaro and his wife, Virginia (DeLucia) of Wernersville and daughter, Cheryl L. Vaccaro of Reading; his granddaughter: Laura (Vaccaro) Sullivan and her husband, Kevin of Haddonfield, NJ and his two great grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his two sisters: Beatrice (Vaccaro) Hildebrand and Grace (Vaccaro) Brogna and three brothers: Michael, Santo and Joseph Vaccaro.
A memorial service for Sam will be at 11am on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 in Auman's Inc. Funeral Home, 390 W. Neversink Rd., Reading, PA 19606. Family and friends will be received in the funeral home on Tuesday from 10 am to 11am. Inurnment will follow the service in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reading.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of the Villa St. Elizabeth and AsceraCare Hospice for the loving care they provided.

Cheryl and family, Sam is now at peace with our Lord. So happy that I met him and saw him through the years. Always a smile and something witty to say. I remember getting you extra ice cream at St. Joseph when you were a patient. You melted all the girls hearts there and at St. Elizabeth's where you last resided. I heard so many stories of your life through your daughter who along with many will miss you. Always willing to help others she told me. Good man to have known. I hope they have orange slices (candy) up there! I know that put a smile on your face. May you now know eternal peace and may our Lord help all those that suffer get through these dark times.
