Samuel Loraine Allan, 92, peacefully passed away at home in Riverton, Utah, surrounded by loving family, on May 21, 2011. Born July 4, 1918, in Mapleton, Utah, he was one of six children of Joseph and Cornelia Brooks Allan. He was educated in Springville schools, Brigham Young University, and American University in Washington, D.C.

Samuel Loraine married his sweetheart, Dorothy Gammell, in Springville on January 7, 1939. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple. He was the father of seven children: Dorothy Ann (Lynn) Jenkins, Saratoga Springs, UT; Judith Elaine (Steve) Kenyon, Riverton, UT; Loueda Marie Jensen, Fountain Green, UT; Birdie Marian (Hank) Miller, Salt Lake City, UT; and Evelyn Kay (Bob) Reed, Layton, UT.

He was preceded in death by sons Terrence Fred and Robert Brooks; also by his sister, Verna, and brothers Leland, Joseph, and Robert Calvin. He is survived by his daughters, eighteen grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by a foster daughter, Priscilla Begay and her husband, Ralph, and children of the Navajo Nation.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps of World War II. He served as personnel manager of federal agencies in Washington, D.C. and Utah. And he served as president of the Temple Quarry Chapter of Sons of Utah Pioneers. He sang tenor with the American West Symphony Chorus and traveled with them to perform in the Scandinavian countries. In his later years, he authored a book, "The Allan Story, a History of the Allan Family."

Sam loved competitive sports and high adventure. He ran in marathons and took up technical climbing. He ran from Draper to Springville to attend his fiftieth high school reunion. He climbed in many high mountain areas, including Teton Peaks, Wind Rivers, and the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal and Tibet. He led back-packing trips into primitive areas for Wasatch Mountain Club and served on its Board of Directors.

With his wife, Dorothy, he served a full-time L.D.S. mission to England. He served in the presidency of the Hereford Branch, and established enduring and loving relationships with members in Hereford and South Wales.

His family and friends will miss his generosity of spirit, his gentle and loving good-nature, his thoughtfulness and wisdom. They will also miss his sense of humor with perfect timing and his numerous and fascinating stories. They are also happy for him, secure in the knowledge that he is happy, free from pain, and with his sweetheart and loving family who have gone before him.

The family extends a special thank you to Alpha Omega Hospice, Bill, Candy, Rose, Gabriel.

Services will be held Friday, May 27, 2011, at 12:00 noon at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. A viewing will take place there on Thursday, evening, May 26, 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour before the funeral. Condolences may be made to www.wasatchlawn.com
