Mr. Milanese was born in the Bronx, New York City, on May 7, 1925 and lived in Yonkers, New York until 2010. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II in the Pacific theater. Following his military service, he attended Seton Hall University in New Jersey and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1952. He then went on to Columbia University Teachers College where he earned his Master's degree in 1955. Mr. Milanese devoted his career to public education, working as a physical education teacher, primarily at Lincoln High School in Yonkers, New York from 1955 until 1992. In addition to his teaching, he was a dedicated and beloved coach of several sports during his tenure including baseball, basketball, and golf.
Sam will be remembered for his selfless devotion to his family and friends, his love of music and sports, especially golf and baseball, his engaging sense of humor, his integrity, pride in his heritage, and his incredible generosity. Sam loved to sing, especially Frank Sinatra tunes, and was also a wonderful dancer. All of this, plus his kind spirit, made him a delight to be around. As a life long New Yorker, he was probably the most loyal Yankees fan in the state!
Mr. Milanese is survived by his niece, Patricia Barnhart and her husband, Frank of East Dennis, Massachusetts, his niece Karen Wing of Aspen, Colorado and Houston, Texas, his nephew Robert Milanese and his wife, Barbara of Bedminster, New Jersey, his nephew Gary Milanese of Key Largo, Florida, and his niece Susan Saturday and her husband Jim, of Boca Raton, Florida. Sam also leaves behind several cousins as well as many friends and former students from the Yonkers, NY area. Sam was predeceased by his sisters Yolanda Milanese and Gemma Collins, his brother-in-law, Edward Collins, Sr., his brother Patrick Milanese, his sister-in-law Corinne Milanese, and his nephew Edward Collins, Jr.
We are grateful to the staffs at Emeritus Senior Living in Hyannis, MA and Epoch Senior Healthcare of Brewster, MA. Their skilled and gentle care was very special and greatly appreciated.
A memorial mass in celebration of Sam's life will be held on May 23, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Church on Station Avenue in South Yarmouth. Internment will be in New Jersey.
