Samuel James Mize, 81, of Humble, was born in Midway, Texas on August 23, 1931 and died in Humble, Texas on May 26, 2013.
Preceded in death by his parents, SJ Mize and Lurah Bell Bennifield, Brothers- George Vernon and Luby Gene, Sister- Mary Ruth Scott, Daughters- Debbie Ann Michals and Barbara Lynn Mize.
Samuel is survived by his sons- Joseph (Theresa) of Houston, Steven (Brenda) of Magnolia, Samuel Jr. (Debbie) of Cleveland. Daughters- Pamela Ramshur (Billy) of Conroe and Lurah Story (Louis) of Porter. He was blessed with 21 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. He also has 6 nephews and 3 nieces.
Samuel served in the US Navy as a SNBM during the Korean War from 1950-1954. Winning 3 medals-Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal.
After an Honorable discharge from the service, he was employed with Weingarten's Bakery on Lockwood. He worked for Weingarten for 34 years, achieving the position of Supervisor. During his time at Weingarten, he also umpired high school and boy's major league baseball for 10-15 years in the Houston area. After Weingarten's closed, he went to work driving an 18 wheeler truck with his youngest brother for a few years. He then went to work for All Tex Coating in Gladewater. When he finally decided to retire he moved to Porter to be closer to his children and grandchildren. During this time he and his youngest brother lived together until Luby died in 2004.
His final years were as a resident of Humble Healthcare in Humble, Texas. He was under the care of Grace Hospice.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31, 2013 at Kingwood Funeral Home, 22800 Highway 59 North, Kingwood, TX 77339. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2013 in the Chapel of Kingwood Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale St., Houston, TX 77023.
