Sanford Etheridge Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 10, 2013.

Sanford Etheridge, Ph.D., born in Conroe, Texas on August 23, 1927, departed this life on September 9, 2013, after a long illness. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helga Pfitzer Etheridge. Dr. Etheridge attended the University of Texas and received his Ph.D. at Harvard University. He pursued part of his post-graduate studies at the University of Saarbruecken in Germany where he met and married his future wife. Dr. Etheridge taught classical languages at Tulane University for many years until his retirement in the late 1993. He was truly a Renaissance man, who mastered multiple languages, raised and showed horses, explored his heritage by learning to read and write Gaelic, and in his later years, enjoyed writing and sharing his satirical limericks and cheering on the New Orleans Saints each Sunday. A genealogy and computer buff, Sanford took pride in researching and documenting his vast family tree, and he was considered the family historian, frequently corresponding with and gladly answering the questions of even distant relatives just getting started on their research. He will always be remembered for his insatiable curiosity, brilliant mind, and sharp wit. He was a loving and generous family man, a devoted husband, and proud father and grandfather always willing to lend a helping hand. Sanford is survived by his three loving daughters, Julia Miller (Richard), Lucy Duhon (Neil), and Emily Etheridge Fuzette (Michael); and five grandchildren, Richard Miller, Jr., Elizabeth Groover, Christiane Miller, Jessica and Jeremy Duhon.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until service time. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Fresenius Medical Care for their attentive and compassionate care during Sanford's illness. Special thanks are also given to Bob and Cassie Pritt, friends and neighbors whose assistance and companionship have been invaluable to Sanford and his family.

Emily, Lucy and Julie,

Uncle Teency was always fun to be with when we got together for family visits. As I got older I really enjoyed conversations with him because he had such interesting things to say about history and family. I also enjoyed our recent email exchanges regarding some old business matters in Conroe. He was always willing to do what he could to help. Dianne and I send our condolences to you all and pray God's strength and comfort for you.

Sanford directed my Master's thesis at Tulane University almost 40 years ago. It is safe to say without his interest and support I never could have managed to write it. He was both a wonderful scholar and a wonderful person.
