Mrs. Nash, 80, of Charlotte, N.C., passed away on March 8, 2013. She was born March 30, 1932 in Tupelo, Miss., and moved to Covington, La., at the age of seven.

Sara was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Dr. Hoke Smith Nash; her mother, Carrie Etta Bryson Smith; her father, William Henderson Bryson; and her stepfather, Alfred Vienne Smith, Jr.

Sara graduated from Vanderbilt University's School of Nursing in 1954. Hoke and Sara met while she was a nursing student and he was a medical student at Vanderbilt. They married after graduation, in June of 1954, and moved to Benton Harbor, Mich., for Hoke's first internship. While there, Sara worked on the obstetrical unit at Mercy Hospital.

Hoke and Sara moved to Charlotte in 1961 when he joined the staff of the Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital. She enjoyed the many close friends she made in Charlotte over the years and was a devoted member of her bridge club and book club.

Sara was a longtime member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. An active volunteer, she served as president of MMAE's Inn (now Hospitality House) and president of the Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center. She also was a member of the Charity League and Mecklenburg Medical Auxiliary and volunteered at the Charlotte Crisis Assistance Ministry.

A devoted wife and mother, Sara loved spending time at the beach with family, friends and a good book. Together with Hoke, she traveled extensively, visiting all seven continents. Their many adventures together included trekking in Nepal and visiting Antarctica.

Sara is survived by her children, Kathryn Nash Davis (Robert) of Richmond, Va., Andrew Kevin Nash (Sheri Lynch) of Charlotte, and Amy Frances Nash (Grant Vanstrum) of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Bryson Elliot Davis, Michael Porter Davis, Andrew Kevin Nash, Jr., Margaret Jennings Nash, Russell Hoke Nash, Zane Adams Nash, Caramia Axland and Olivia Axland; brothers, William Henderson Bryson (Grace) of Krotz Springs, La., and Alfred Vienne Smith, III (Cheryl) of Covington, La.; sister, Margaret Smith Bruhl (Glyndon) of Charlotte; nieces, Karen Bryson Reed, Gwendolyn Bryson Hatten, Myra Bryson Plaisance, Syndia Bryson Guillot, Elizabeth Bryson Mistric, Laura Bruhl Houghland (also a goddaughter), Leslie Bruhl Beal; nephews, David John Bryson, Bradford Allen Smith, Scot Everett Smith, Todd Stephen Smith; goddaughter, Ellen Bryan Cox; and her beloved dog, Sam.

The family would like to thank the staff at Presbyterian's Harris Hospice Unit for the loving care that they provided to Sara.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church or to the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN), Gift Processing Office, PMB 407727, 2301 Vanderbilt Place, Nashville, TN 37240-7727).

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be in the parlor following the service.
