He continued his education at Texas A&M University where he earned a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1942. Upon receiving his degree from A&M, he received orders to report for duty as a Lt. in the U.S. Calvary. As the horse Calvary was being changed to "mechanized" equipment, he lost his horse and got a "half track". He served in Europe during World War II during which he was promoted to Captain. On August 1, 1942, he married Marjoria Adele Thompson in Junction City, Kansas. After sixty-five years of marriage, she preceded him in death April 15, 2008.

After his honorable discharge from the service, he managed the H.B. Zachry Ranch, "Rancho Blanco" in Laredo, Texas. During his time in Laredo, he was instrumental in introducing the American Aberdeen-Angus (BlackAngus) to South Texas and Mexico. In 1965 he was employed by Texas A&M International Programs and was assigned to assist the Dominican Republic in developing an Agricultural Experiment Station. After six years in the Dominican Republic, he was appointed director of the Texas A&M Experiment Station in McGregor, Texas. In 1985, he retired and spent time traveling with his wife and helping his "kids" building houses and barns and moving. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of McGregor.
Also preceding him in death was a daughter, Susan Adel Hubbard, two brothers, Jack L. and Edward Pegues.

Survivors include a son Tom Pegues and wife Judy of Midlothian; a son-in-law, Jerry Hubbard of LaFerria; two daughters, Ginger Pegues of Talaquah, Oklahoma, Roberta Tandy and husband Tim of Burleson; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
