Obituary

Shirley Laurette Emerson (Muzzie), 91, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2014. A native of Providence, R.I., Mrs. Emerson lived a full life in various places as a Navy wife, including Florida, Cuba, Maryland, and Maine. She finally settled in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area, where she has resided for the last 60 years. She is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Mr. John S. Emerson. She is survived by her two children, Barrie and Rhonda; her five grandchildren, Chris, Tony, Aaron, Tracey, and Shannon; and ten great-grandchildren (who all know her as "Muzzie"). Shirley Laurette Emerson (Muzzie), 91, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2014. A native of Providence, R.I., Mrs. Emerson lived a full life in various places as a Navy wife, including Florida, Cuba, Maryland, and Maine. She finally settled in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area, where she has resided for the last 60 years.

She is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Mr. John S. Emerson. She is survived by her two children, Barrie and Rhonda; her five grandchildren, Chris, Tony, Aaron, Tracey, and Shannon; and ten great-grandchildren (who all know her as "Muzzie"). Mrs. Emerson played an active role throughout her community by serving in the Red Cross, as a member of the Ocean Park Women's Club, and as a member of the Altar Guild of Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. In addition, Mrs. Emerson served as a volunteer at the Virginia Marine Science Museum, where she was awarded the Hampton Roads Achievement Award for amassing more than 7,000 volunteer hours at the museum. Mrs. Emerson was also a talented poetess, pianist, and painter.
A viewing will be held at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home in Virginia Beach on Wednesday, July 9, from 9-11 am. Memorial services will be held immediately following the visitation at 11 am.
