Shirley Martin Menzies passed to a better place in her sleep Monday afternoon June 30th. She was 81 years old, born January 16th, 1933 in Junction, Texas. Her parents were John Rowland and Ada Martin.
Shirley grew up in Menard, Texas and was active in the band and was a twirler for the band while in high school. She graduated in 1950 and attended San Angelo Junior College where she continued her twirling career. Shirley transferred to Texas Tech after her freshman year.
Shirley met her future husband Carl while attending first grade in Menard. They grew up and went to school together through high school and married in 1951, living in Lubbock until Carl graduated from Tech. Carl and Shirley moved to Brownwood, Texas for a short time and then lived in Manhattan, Kansas, Lexington, Kentucky and Brookings, South Dakota before returning home to West Texas and San Angelo in 1971. Here they lived and maintained homes in Menard and San Angelo and operated the C&S Menzies Ranch in Menard.
Shirley's pride and joy was her family. They always came first and she loved them all! She spent many happy hours with the grandkids at the Menard Ranch teaching them about nature things, how to drive a car, and how to enjoy delicious jelly toast.
Shirley was a friendly person who loved people, loved company, smiled a lot and seldom complained. She leaves many friends from all over. Her final year was spent at the Springs Alzheimer's Care Unit in San Angelo where she made many new friends. Her greeting to any and all visitors was, "I'm so glad to see you."
The family is grateful to the First United Methodist Church "Cheers" class and their support. Shirley often asked about the Cheers group. The family is also especially thankful for the good, loving care provided by the staff at the Springs. Special thanks also to San Angelo Hospice and particularly Tracie Phillips.
Survivors include husband Carl Menzies; son Dr. Steve Menzies and wife Kay; daughter Linda Menzies Crocker and son in-law Dr. Scott Crocker; granddaughter Lauren Napier Harris and husband Madison Harris and great-grandkids Preston and Nathan; grandson Harris Napier, III; and granddaughters: Bryce Menzies Simmons and husband Jeremy, Cara Crocker and Megan Crocker.
You are my sunshine, My only sunshine. You make me happy when skies were gray. I believe you knew dear, how much I loved you. Lord, I'm glad my Sunshine is now with you!
In place of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice.
A celebration of Shirley's life will take place Thursday, July 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Sam Hunnicutt officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home.
