Shirley Lorraine Proia, age 78, passed away at home on Friday, March 23, 2012. She was born on August 29, 1933 in Quincy, Massachusetts to the late Emma Gregorio and Leonard Gervis Fitzgerald. After graduating from Quincy High School, she married Samuel (Sam) Proia in 1952. After living in Hialeah, Florida and Newton, Massachusetts, she and Sam settled in Framingham, Massachusetts and raised four sons-Richard, Keith and twins David and Mark. After working for a time as a nurse's aid, she served as a cook at the Glass Sailboat in Gloucester, Massachusetts. In the years that followed she attended classes at Salem State Collage, graduating with a degree in Culinary Arts and later worked as a Marriott chef preparing gourmet meals for international flights. After her husband Sam's retirement, they split their time between Framingham and Westport Island, Maine, before moving to Spring Hill, Florida in 1998. Shirley was a member of the Order of the Sons of Italy, and an active volunteer at Society of St. Vincent de Paul food pantry and thrift shop. She was a member of the St Frances Cabrini parish of Spring Hill. An extraordinary cook, she also contributed a seasonal cooking column to the River Country Estates News Courier. She was an avid reader, a sharp wit, and a dear, loving presence in the lives of all who knew her. Shirley is survived by her son Richard and his wife Diane, her son David, her son Keith, her sister Patricia, and her niece, Rhonda; she is also survived by grandchildren Brandon, Brittany, Jamie, Nikki and Samantha. She will be missed by cousins, other relatives, and many friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Sam, brother Marshall and son Mark.

"The Coppola family was sad to hear of the passing of our Auntie Shirley. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Peggy, Patti, Rick & Chris Coppola" Patti Biggs (Vail, CO)
