Sonja Derby Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2017.

Sonja Derby, 78, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 9, 2017 in the loving comfort of her home surrounded by family.

She is survived by her husband Jerry Derby, sister Valli Conine, children Jeff Adair and Talma Orbison, grandchildren Adair Claycomb, Alexandra Adair, Christopher Adair, Cole Adair, Kasey Orbison, Makena Orbison, and faithful companion Cindy.

Born and raised in Dallas, the daughter of Egbert and Carrie Byram. She received her associate’s degree from Tyler Junior College in 1959. After graduation she returned to Dallas and married Vandal Douglas Adair. They built a successful construction business and raised two children before his untimely death in 1983. She then began a career with United States Postal Service where she worked until her retirement.

After spending ten years as a widow she once again found love with Jerry Derby and they had a wonderful 25 years together. They met during square dancing at the Lone Star Solos and remained active members throughout her life. Not only did they enjoy square and round dancing but traveling around the country by car. She loved theater and especially enjoyed the Garland Civic Theater where she and her husband were patrons.

She was an animal lover at heart and spent decades feeding homeless animals throughout the city with her husband, as well as bringing many homeless dogs into their home.

Sonja was such a sweet and caring person and I miss her and always will. She said so many kind and positive things to me that meant and still mean so much to me. I'll always remember her kinds words. Always trying to make a person feel good about themselves. A true Christian attitude of a people builder..
She visited me in the hospital in 2014 and had me in stitches with stories of her dog, Cindy RIP Sonja. You are loved and missed.

Sonja was a sweet lady who loved to dance with her husband Jerry. They enjoyed the grandchildren, theatre and pets together. She always took the side of the person down on their luck. She enjoyed family and cruises especially to Alaska. I will miss her and playing dominoes on Wednesdays and eating fish on Fridays. I will miss her at Square Dances and Square Dance parties.
