Srinibas Mahapatra Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 1, 2012.

Mahapatra, Dr Srinibas age 63, passed away October 30th, 2012 at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, from a heart attack. "Sri," as he was known by his colleagues and close friends, was born in Puri, Odisha, India, December 30th, 1948. After spending his early years in Calcutta studying medicine, Sri married his wife Chandana, who he would later boast was the most beautiful woman in all of India. Sri and Chandana then emigrated to the United Kingdom, where he completed his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Manchester. Continued travels brought them to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1987. He completed further training at the University of Michigan and would go on to work at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, where he would eventually become Chief of Inpatient Psychiatry and Director of the Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Program. Beloved by his colleagues, he was also an assistant professor at the University of Michigan, becoming a valued teacher and mentor. When not working, Dr Mahapatra delighted in Indian classical music and classical dance. He is survived by his wife, Chandana, his two sons, Rahul and Arun, his mother and four brothers. For those wishing to make donations, the Mahapatra family requests that they be made to Disabled American Veterans, whom Dr Mahapatra served for over 20 years. "

My Uncle Sri was a great man. Whenever I needed advice, he was there for me. It seems like whenever I needed just about anything, there he was for me. It's been a couple months since his death and I can't even comprehend he's gone. I think about him single day. I'll never forget the stuffed barney doll he bought me for my birthday as a child. I'll never forget this man. If i'm half the man my uncle was, i'll die a happy man. I love you buddiya Uncle. I promise i'll make you proud.

I am shocked to hear of Dr. Mahapatra! I remember the day that My husband and I ran into he and his wife Chandana at the Nee Hee restorant in Canton. we had a lovely visit. I have worked here at the VA for the same years as he did and our paths crossed frequently going in and out of the parking garage where he continued to have his cigarettes. My sympathy and prays go out to you Chandana and your sons as you go through this hard time. Remember that God gives us the strength to get through these very hard times.

Dr. Mahapatra wasn't just any attending. He was Dr. M to us, an irreverent but always sincere teacher and mentor who did everything he could for his patients. Despite how hard his work was (running an inpatient unit of difficult, chronic patients with few resources) and all of the changes that came during his career, he continued to do the best he could for his residents, his staff, and, most of all, his patients. I know no other attending who so willingly accepted our teasing and jokes at each Nite Out performance with a big smile on his face. I know no other attending who had each patient's initials and last 4 of their social security number memorized. And I know no other attending who could reach out to veterans like he did, with respect, empathy, and honesty while never being above a good joke. I learned much more during my intern and second years by watching him do what he did best than I learned from any textbook; and, for that, I will always be grateful. Thank you, Dr. M, we will miss you.

Dr. Mahapatra was a wonderful teacher, mentor and human being. The first year of psychiatry residency can be very trying and his caring ways and wonderful sense of humor made it so much easier to manage. I have many fond memories of "Dr. M" and he will be greatly missed by all.... My thoughts and prayers are with his family. With deepest sympathy, Kristine Roth

I had the great pleasure of supervising Sri when he was a resident in Ann Arbor. This was his second residency as he had completed training in the UK, so we both understood the irony of the circumstance. It did not perturb him to be assigned to me, a younger man. Together we explored the uncertainty of complex presentations in the cases he discussed. As I read the comments that friends have written about him I see again the modest, wise and warm fellow I knew long ago. We had spoken of traveling together to India, a journey I looked forward to but never took. I would hear news of him every year when I spoke with his sister-in-law an annual meeting and imagine seeing him again. My late wife, Nancy Speed, was so glad that she was able to hire him at the AAVA because she knew his remarkable character. I am honored to have known him and he will always inspire me.

My condolences come your way as I reflect on the very special memories I have of Dr. Mahapatra. I recall him walking in the door as a Psychiatry resident at the VA in 1987. He was always a very special part of the VA. He has many long standing relationships with the Veterans he cared for, and will be greatly missed by them. It can take a long time to develop a trust from the Veterans, and I think that that was accomplished on many levels and he will be missed as the rock of the inpatient psychiatry unit to those Veterans who knew him well and were helped by him. He was a true advocate for the patient and was extremely supportive of his staff. We will miss his strength and wisdom very much. Nancy Dermyer, Patient Advocate

Dear Mahapatra family,

From a former psychiatric resident who trained under "Dr. M":

My deepest condolences to you in this difficult time. Please know that Dr. M was a beloved figure in the lives of countless psychiatry residents throughout the years. He was our first teacher, and became almost a father figure for nervous new doctors. He had the hardest job of any faculty in the department, and took care of some of the most difficult patients, yet he still maintained an aura of lightness and humor about him.

Please know that so many of us have wonderful memories of him, and have been communicating with each other to honor those memories. He will not ever be forgotten.

With sympathy,

Just a couple hours we sat in his deck during our last visit was so warm that those discussions on his future plans, advices are still vibrant. I had very little idea that we would not see him next time on. He remains an acomplished person and a role model as a community leader. Rinaapa you know that you can call us anytime and we would be there. May Rahul and Arun have all the strength. Know that the love of those around you will surely help you through going forward.

Like many other trainees who came through the VA Inpatient Service, Dr. Mahapatra was my first supervisor in Michigan and my first role model for being a psychiatrist. I learned more from him than can be recounted here, but what I will remember the most is the way patients responded to his genuine empathy in trying to make sense of their chaotic and stressful life circumstances. When Dr. M was around, it always felt like things were going to work out for the better. He will be missed dearly.

Rest in peace Sri. My condolences to the Mahapatra family.

My condolences and sympathy go out to Reena Apa, Rahul & Arun. I will pray that peace and comfort come to you now during this trying time. I have many memories and I will miss Dr. Srinibas Mahapatra so much. We would take our breaks together, two or three a day. He always sat in a specific seat, & when someone was in that seat, he would never ask them to move he would just wait until they got up. Sometimes I would ask them if it is okay if he could sit there, please – everyone was always accommodating. We would spend our breaks on discussions about his unit and he would say “When I decide there has to be a change, I will come up with a plan that will take care of it”. Then we would talk about his plan(s), some days he would just tell me that it is a surprise. I think he would like quiet breaks sometimes, but I made up for the silence and he was so polite and never asked me to hush. I consider myself so fortunate to have known him and have so many memories. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May God comfort and guide his family through this difficult time and the wonderful memories give them strength.

God Bless You,
Kelly

I shared a certain rapport with Sri but I am sure there are dozens of colleagues who can justifiably claim the same. I remember our discussions about Yoga and oriental philosophy and how, shorn of the usual religious baggage, it was effective in managing fear and anxiety. Sri was open and straightforward and it shone thru his visage. It will be wierd talking about or doing business in AAVA's 8W/AIMH and not having Sri as part of it's physics and chemistry.
My deepest regard to his family.

Words are awfully inadequate to express our feelings at times and that is exactly how I feel now. I didn't know Dr.Srinibas Mahapatra too well but had spoken to him couple of times. He came across as a very warm and affectionate person. He could not make it to my son's 6th Birthday as he was on call so Reena nani came alone but I remember vividly that he had promised to come to our place and play with my boys later. I know Reena nani quite well, have met her many times and spoken to her so much. I can't even begin to imagine what she must be going through right now. I pray to God that she comes out of this with stength. If you are reading this Reena nani, please know that I love you and will be there for you if you just need a friend to listen to you. Take care. Be strong and take good care of yourself. Hugs and warm wishes,
