WELLFLEET-- Stephen Hopkins Anthony of Wellfleet and Boston MA died peacefully at his home in Wellfleet on October 24, 2010, after a year-long struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was 73. He was married to Barbara Mead Anthony for fifty years, and was the father of two daughters, Susan and Emily Anthony.

Raised in Newton Center, Steve graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton NY in 1959, and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. After completing his service in the Army Reserves, Steve worked in the Mortgage and Real Estate department of New England Mutual Life Insurance Company for twenty years. In 1982 he became a founding partner of Copley Real Estate Advisors, a real estate investment firm specializing in investments primarily for major corporate and public pension funds. The rapid growth and success of Copley, and his genuine fondness and respect for all the people who worked there, was a source of great satisfaction in his life. Steve remained at Copley until he retired in 1994.

Steve raised his family in Wellesley and later kept a home in Boston, but his heart has always been in Wellfleet. As a boy he spent summers at his family's ancestral home, Hamblen Farm, and he became a full time resident in 1994. Steve's great love for the Cape and for Wellfleet in particular is evidenced by his very deep commitment to community service and conservation. His community engagement included long term directorships and volunteer service at the Wellfleet Conservation Trust, the Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts, the Association for the Preservation of Cape Cod, The Cape Cod Land Fund, the Highland Center, Chequessett Yacht and Country Club, and Wellfleet Preservation Hall. In addition to these many organizations on Cape, Steve served as a trustee of Hamilton College for over twenty years, as a corporator at Wheelock College, as a director of the City Mission Society in Boston, and, since 1974, as a director of the Community Builders, an organization that helps to develop low income housing. Steve knew he had been fortunate in his life, and was determined to give back on many levels.

Steve will be remembered as a caring mentor and friend, whose conscientiousness was matched by his sense of humor and fun. Many will miss the sight of him driving his red 1963 T-bird through town. He leaves his wife Barbara, his daughter Susan of Brooklyn NY and Wellfleet, his daughter Emily and her husband David Maymudes of Seattle WA and Wellfleet and their two children, Sophia and Nathaniel. He is also survived by his brothers J. Danford of Bloomfield CT and Wellfleet, Cushman of Yarmouth ME and Wellfleet, David Smith of Wayland MA and Wellfleet (the husband of his late sister Caroline), Barbara's twin brother Dr. Philip Mead of Shelburne VT, and by many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Wellfleet Congregational Church at 1 PM on Saturday, November 6, with a reception to follow at the Chequessett Yacht and Country Club. Memorial donations may be made to the Wellfleet Conservation Trust, PO Box 84, Wellfleet, MA 02667, to continue Steve's legacy of preserving Cape Cod's natural spaces.
Arrangements under the direction of Nickerson Funeral Home, Wellfleet, MA.
