My fondest memory of Steve is from our college days at Wofford college. One evening after a Bible study with a large group of young people from Evangel Cathedral and Wofford college we were all sitting down and having dinner at our local Fuddruckers in Spartanburg, SC. You have to remember that Steve was a quiet person and when he spoke every one listened. So this evening sitting at Fuddruckers Steve picks up the bottle of mustard placed on the table and notices that it says "Mother Fuddruckers" on it. He looks at us says, "sure sounds like a cuss word to me". Every one at the table just burst out laughing, not only because he was right but also he was funny.
I remember for two years playing Raquel ball with my friend Steve several nights a week and I can't recall a single time when I won a single game. You could say that I was bad at racquet ball or Steve was just that good. He truly was a gifted athlete. He would ride his Pugeot bicycle several times a week to neighboring towns twenty to thirty miles away and back.
I remember one evening when we were driving around town in my beat up 1963 VW Beetle Bug we came across a really nice dark green VW Beetle Bug with a semi automatic gear shift that had no clutch and nice sporty rims. Steve immediately fell in love with that car and thus bought his first car. Later he used his bonus money from joining the army reserves to buy a new Toyota Tercel.
I remember one night when we were driving around town in my car and we ran out of gas. Being careful as we were, we pulled the car in a grassy median of the road and turned our hazard lights on. After an ordeal to find a gas can and purchasing some gas, we returned to find that the hazard lights had drained the car's battery. As we were standing there looking pathetic, a nice young woman stopped by and gave us a jump start. The woman must have been in her late twenties or early thirties. Steve asked the lady if she went to college in town. Mind you it was dark and maybe a small amount of street light. I could see the lady blushing and asking Steve, "how old do you think I am". It made that ladies night.
My friend I will truly miss you. Life happened, we got married, raised children and lost touch. By the time I found you again you were in so much pain I did not know how to be your friend. I am so sorry for those missed opportunities.
The only consolation I have is that you are with our Lord Jesus and "Pain no more".
Your Friend,
Christopher LalDin
