Stephen James Mecsery (Jim) son of Stephen and Shirley Mecsery of Cos Cob, passed away on Sunday June 21, 2015 of heart failure at Yale Hospital in New Haven, CT at the age of 68. Born in Greenwich, Jim attended the Greenwich Public Schools and later went on to graduate from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida. He began his career in flying at the age of 15 as a U.S. Air mail employee.
Jim was a flight instructor for Pan AM and Delta Airlines, and an engineer with Atlas Air flying 747 aircraft. Although his distinguished career as a pilot took him to all corners of the world, it was his home in Cos Cob that made him the happiest.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Sheila of 45 years and his two sons, Stephen James of Los Angeles, California, and Michael Richard of Cos Cob . He is also survived by his siblings, Sean Mecsery of Stamford, and his family, Sandy Kamen of Fl, and her family, and niece Stacy Collins and her family of Riverside, CT. He is predeceased by his sister, Stacey's mother, Diane Fowler.
As a lifelong resident of greenwich Jim was well known to everyone in town. His warm personality, love of a good story and sense of humor was adored by all who knew him.
Jim was a family man beyond anything else.
He had a passion for restoring old cars and at any given time an old car
was waiting for him in his garage. He loved trains, but most of all Jim enjoyed being with his friends and family. He loved walks and picnics at at Todds Point and enjoying time at the North Mianus River Club. To know Jim, was to love Jim!
Friends may call at the Gallagher's Funeral Home in Greenwich on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. A service will be held on Friday morning at 10:00 A.M. at the Diamond Hill Methodist Church in Cos Cob.

On behalf of the Pan Am Historical Foundation we deeply regret the passing of our dear Pan Am friend Jim. He loved Pan Am and the Norman Blake Luncheons we held every other month at Marianacci's Restaurant in Port Chester, NY. We have submitted 5 photographs of today's lunch honoring Jim taken by Robert A. Genna. Please view them in the guest book.

My heart is broken to hear of Jim's passing. He was a wonderful friend, always ready with a smile or a laugh. He was an outstanding airman and a true "aviator," something very few are these days. The time I spent with him at Atlas will always be treasured. Rest in peace my friend, blue skies and tailwinds for your journey west. My sincerest condolences to his family that he loved so much.
