Stephen R. Walsh, age 83 of Swampscott, passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 with his family at his side. He was born on May 8, 1933 in Lynn the son of the late, Stephen M. and Helen (McSweeny) Walsh. He was raised and educated in Lynn and graduated from St. John's Prep and Salem State College. He served his country in the US Navy Reserves for over 20 years, and was honorably discharged. He worked as a teacher for over 35 years. Many of those years, he taught English at Lynn Classical High School in Lynn, where he retired. Stephen was active with the Lynn Teacher's Credit Union, and was elected to their Board of Directors in 1972.
Stephen was a man of many talents. He loved performing in theater, and belonged to many theater groups locally. He loved to draw, and was a gifted painter. He was a member of the No. Shore Artists Association. He was a voracious reader, and kept his own personal journal most of his life. Stephen enjoyed staying active. He belonged to both the Marblehead and Salem YMCA clubs. He was an avid sports enthusiast, and always liked watching the latest team on a winning streak. He and his wife, Catherine enjoyed many trips together to Asia and Europe over the years.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Catherine M. (Strople) Walsh of Swampscott. His 4 sons; Stephen Walsh and wife, Patricia of Swampscott, Thomas Walsh and wife, Ajaree of Newburyport, Robert Walsh and wife, Marianne of Rumford, RI and Peter Walsh and wife, Alice of Groveland. His sister, Nancy Walsh of Swampscott. His grandchildren; Kaitlin Walsh, Stephen Walsh, Erin Walsh, Colleen Walsh, Jeremiah Walsh, Nicholas Walsh, Maxwell Walsh and Nathan Walsh. Stephen was predeceased by his brother, Jim Walsh.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Sunday, December 4, 2016 from 3-6 PM at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn, MA 01904. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 5, 2016 at 11 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services in Swampscott Cemetery.
