Sterling Cameron Adams, 87, of Savannah, died Monday, May 21, 2012 at his residence. He was born Aug 13, 1924 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and graduated from Parkersburg High School, and then received his Bachelor of Music in Piano and his Master of Music in Piano, and Master of Music in Historical & Critical Research from the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio; Juilliard School of Music, in New York, NY, and Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education, Piano and French Literature, from Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana. Sterling Cameron Adams, 87, of Savannah, died Monday, May 21, 2012 at his residence.
He was born Aug 13, 1924 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and graduated from Parkersburg High School, and then received his Bachelor of Music in Piano and his Master of Music in Piano, and Master of Music in Historical & Critical Research from the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio; Juilliard School of Music, in New York, NY, and Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education, Piano and French Literature, from Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana.
He was a veteran of WW II, having served in the US Army Air Corps.
His teaching experience was as a teacher of Piano for 38 years on the college and conservatory level, with the last 19 years, serving as Assistant and Associate Professor of Music, Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, Ga. He also worked for the Savannah Morning News as a Music Consultant.
He served as Organist and choir director at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Savannah, Ga; Organist at Memorial Baptist Church, Savannah, Ga; Organist and choir director at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Hilton Head Island,SC; Organist and choir director at St. Andrew's Independent Episcopal Church, Savannah, Ga., Organist and choir director at Congregation Mickve Israel Synagogue, in Savannah, Ga. He also served as Pianist, for the Savannah Symphony Orchestra. He performed harpsichord, piano and organ parts in many Statesboro – GSC Symphony Orchestra Concerts.
He was a member of the Savannah Chapter, American Guild of Organists since 1978, and the American College of Musicians of the National Guild of Piano Teachers. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity – Life Member since 1946, member of Pi Kappa Lambda Fraternity – Pi Chapter (since 1952).
He conceived the idea and helped establish the International Piano Competition at Hilton Head, SC, which now attracts entrants worldwide.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and great nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial: 4 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2012 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Father William Willoughby, and Rev. John Anderson, officiating.
Interment: Private
Friends are invited to a reception immediately following the Mass, in the parlor of the Church.
Remembrances: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1802 Abercorn Street, Savannah, Ga., 31404., or the Hilton Head International Piano Competition Foundation.
