Steven M. Benecke – Wenham
Steven M. Benecke, age 53 of Wenham, passed away peacefully at home on January 9, 2018 following a courageous battle with ALS. Steve was born on September 26, 1964 in Hawthorne, CA, the son of the late Bernard J. and Patricia A. (McInnis) Benecke. Steve graduated from Lynn Voc. Tech. H.S. (1982). He received his Associates Degree from North Shore Community College and also attended Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Steve worked for over 30 years in all facets of the construction business, most of it with R.C. Griffin in Peabody where he worked as a project manager.
Exceptionally creative, funny and handy, Steve loved playing guitar in his Thursday "band camp," tinkering with just about any kind of vehicle, and boating with family and friends. He had various hobbies but was also never afraid to try something new.
Steve is survived by his wife of 12 years, Lisa (Avery) Benecke and their 2 daughters, Erin Avery Benecke and Kaylin Ann Benecke of Wenham. Brother, Kevin Benecke and his wife, Tina of North Reading. His nieces and nephews: Eric, Luke and Mia Benecke of North Reading, and Caitlyn and Ashley Avery of Wellesley. Numerous beloved cousins from both the east and west coast also survive him.
Friends and family are invited to attend Steve's Celebration of Life on Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 2 to 4 PM at the First Church in Wenham, 1 Arbor Street, Wenham, MA 01984. Steve's passion and zest for life often found him participating in those activities where he performed best while dressed casually and comfortably. Please honor Steve's memory by attending in casual attire. In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve's memory are requested to: ALS Association Massachusetts Chapter, 685 Canton Street, Suite 103, Norwood, MA 02062. www.als-ma.org . I am at a loss for words. Thinking of the times I was with Steve I can only smile. We shared some great times and a lot of laughter within our nucleus of mutual friends. He was a fun guy to be around. I am grateful to have know him as a friend. Rest easy Steve.

It was an honor and a life lesson to know Steve the last several years. Steve faced ALS with the utmost courage and grace. Though his physical struggle the last months was clear, I never heard him once complain or mention it. Steve always wore a great smile and asked how everyone else was. He was a good listener. I was always glad to see him and enjoyed talking with him. Thursday nights at 15 Walnut in Hamilton will never be the same....We will miss you, Steve. This world has lost a good man. And us a friend. I am so sorry and sad your life was cut short. RIP. Am praying for your daughters, wife and families. Sarah Winch, Wenham, MA

We will miss Steve and he will be in our hearts forever. He was a great son-in-law and loving father to our granddaughters.
He was a strong and courageous person who fought an awful disease and yet worked until the end, which came too soon.
With love and admiration,
Barbara and Ken Bourque

I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Steve's family. Words can't always explain the pain felt when a loved one is lost in death. But, God understands your pain and He is close to those who are brokenhearted and comforts those who are mourning. May the "God of all comfort," comfort and strengthen you now and in the days ahead.
