Suellen Kozey McCuin, 49, of Essex, CT, beloved wife of J. Scott McCuin, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015, with her family and friends at her side after an unexpected and brief illness. Suellen was born in Derby, CT to Madelyn Hart Kozey and the late Walter Kozey of Old Saybrook, CT. She graduated from Old Saybrook High School and received her Bachelor's Degree from Central Connecticut State University. She was a parishioner at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Essex, CT. Suellen enjoyed a successful career in government affairs and was most recently Executive Director for the Connecticut Council of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. She was an outstanding leader in the fight to protect the 1,000 acre forest now known as "The Preserve" located in her childhood town of Old Saybrook and her current home in Essex. Suellen was an avid protector of the environment and loved animals of all kinds, but especially horses and dogs. She often recounted childhood stories of riding horses in Old Saybrook in many parades and on the beaches. Suellen shared many special moments with those who were close to her and loved taking family trips to Watch Hill and Lauderdale by the Sea, all of which have left us with many unforgettable memories. Suellen will be greatly missed by her family, and the vast number of people she had connected with over the years, who knew how passionate she was about all things good in life.
Suellen is survived by her husband Scott and their two beautiful children, Maddy and Owen; her mother Madelyn Hart Kozey of Old Saybrook; her sister Marilyn Abrahamsson and her husband Glen Abrahamsson, nephews Ben, Gunnar and Zac of Old Lyme; her brother Paul Kozey and wife Anastasia, niece and nephews Hannah, Danielle and Rick of Old Saybrook; her brother John Kozey of Quaker Hill; her sister Kathleen Lunz and her husband Chris, nephew and nieces, Connor, Grace and Caitlyn of Ivoryton; her mother-in-law Betty McCuin of Enfield; and her sister-in-law Heather McCuin Wasileski and brother-in-law Steve Wasileski, niece and nephew, Peyton and Parker of Enfield.
Calling hours for celebrating Suellen and her life will be at the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook on Friday, August 28 from 6-9 p.m. A mass service and reception will be held on Saturday, August 29 at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, 14 Prospect Street, Essex. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kozey McCuin Children Education Fund, c/o Essex Savings Bank, PO Box 950, Essex, CT 06426, or The Old Saybrook Land Trust.

"Scott and family, My heart goes out to you at this terrible time. I hope the love of your friends and family will help you to make it through the days..."
