Bas came to the United States January 2, 1975, where he earned his accounting degree and master's degree from the University of Houston. He worked at several jobs before he met Leah. After a brief courtship, Bas and Leah were married on May 11, 1984, and recently celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary.
Bas was always passionate about sports. He was a skilled athlete in many different sports. He was a champion table tennis player, and was awarded a position on the 1980 U.S. Olympic Table Tennis team. He enjoyed many other sports including tennis and bowling. On weekends, more often than not, you would find him on the golf course. His passion for golf was transferred to his daughter, Brittany, who enjoyed the sport almost as much as he did.
