Obituary

Sylvia Guss was a 5'4" dynamo. Always physically fit and perfectly coiffed, and always the best dressed woman in the room. Born Sylvia Pritzker in Jersey City in 1919, she graduated from William Dickinson High School and the University of Michigan where she dated a football star before falling in love with Harry Guss with whom she was married for exactly 50 years. During the war she drove an ambulance for the Red Cross, meeting the hospital ships as they arrived home. She also taught shorthand and typing as well as the Palmer Method of handwriting for which she was the greatest exemplar. She played golf and cards at Edgewood Country Club of which she was a founding member. She was a first class dancer and a wonderful dinner companion. An excellent athlete well into her 90s, she resisted invitations to develop an exercise program for octogenarians. She liked to travel, go to the theatre, and give advice. She liked to have a good time and will be missed for her elegance and entertaining companionship.

Sylvia Guss died peacefully in her sleep on February 10 at the age of 94 at Hebrew Senior Life in Boston where she moved after suffering a stroke in 2011. She is survived by her daughter, Judith Wien (Wakefield, MA) and sons Jeffrey (Wyckoff, N.J.) and David (Somerville, MA) and grandchildren Deborah Wien, Lori Cohen, Jason Guss, and Chloe Guss, and great-grandchildren Benjamin, Rachel, Abigail, and Joshua.

There will be a private, graveside service.
