Sylvia Irene Hayek, 81, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2012. Sylvia was born April 30, 1930 to Holger and Marie Jorgensen in Albert Lea, MN. She was a graduate of Grandview College and worked as a secretary at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, teacher, and homemaker.
Sylvia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose absence will be felt daily. She showed those around her how to love through her sixty year marriage to her husband, Harland. Sylvia enjoyed donating her time to local charities, playing piano and organ, sewing, canoeing, and swimming.
She will be remembered for brightening the lives of her family and friends with her love and for always having a root beer and closet full of toys ready for her grandchildren.
Sylvia is survived by her husband, Harland; children, Gail Hayek, Kent Hayek, Lynne Shrum, and Scott (Anji) Hayek; grandchildren, Ashley, Emma, Heather and Sophie; and special family friends, Linda Hurst and Lesa Ahrens.
Visitation will be from 12 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at McLaren's Chapel followed by burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. A Memorial Service will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday at Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, where she was a longtime member. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.
