TATUM MICHAEL "MIKE" SHEFFIELD, age 56, of Missouri City Texas, passed away in an accident on August 2nd 2013, in Woodville, Texas. I learned of Mike's passing recently and am very saddened. He was a great person, friend and colleague. He helped out my family and I after we moved from Denver to Houston in the early 1980's. My belated condolences to Mary and her sons.

A wondeful man, a great mentor of 3D geophysics and life. Thanks to you Mike for sharing the world of visualisation to inspire me onwards. Heaven's gain, our loss.

I am at a loss for adequate words. Mike was a good friend, an inspiration at work, a mentor who unselfishly helped anyone who came to him and an outstanding leader in our office. He helped me to understand seismic attributes, collaborated with me on numerous occasions and shared his time and ideas for improving how we work, learn, and live. His easy laugh and ready smile were two constants at our office that I will miss greatly. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you can find some comfort in knowing that he was and will always be respected for who he was and how he impacted those around him in a positive way.

Mike made a huge difference on all his teams and projects, but what I absolutely favored most about him was his kind, gentle soul and smile.

Even though he was only a year older than me he was an amazing mentor on the volume interpretation geophysical specialty . Just a really great guy and generous to a T with his time and knowledge, at work and in the rest of the world.

Mike and I started work at Texaco down in Midland on the same day, and worked together in both Midland and Denver for many years. Mike was a fantastic geophysicist, and especially shined brightly on the Oklahoma-Arkoma Basin project during that time period. But more important to Mike than how well he was doing at work was how much his family meant to him. In those days, they were Mary, "Chaz," and "Mikey." I remember the happy and funny stories he used to tell about you guys, like the time one of the boys brought a hose and sprinkler into their family room in Aurora, and turned on the water - he wanted to see if he could turn the brown carpet to green like his Dad did with the lawn outside. Mary, Chuck, and Mike - your husband and father was a wonderful person, and I am saddened beyond words at his passing. Please take good care of yourselves. I am so sorry.

Mary, Chaz & Mike - I am so very sorry for your loss! Although I have only known you all a short time compared to other folks in your lives, please know that I consider you all part of my extended family. Being with you all at family gatherings at Robyn & Ken's house, I always saw a family filled with love, compassion for others & a lot of fun to be with! Please know that you all, as well as the rest of the family are in my thoughts & prayers. God bless you all!

Six days before Mike's tragic accident Mary, Robyn and I spent accompanied Mike to Oklahoma to play in a Poker tournament and to celebrate his 56th birthday. I won't forget the excitement in his voice and how proud he was as he recalled "I may not have won, but I know my skills are god enough to play with the "big guys". Yes, he is "gone to soon", and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, especially Mary, Chas, Michael, "Big Sister", Francis and Robyn and his neices and nephews. He was the only person I ever knew who put ketchup on his ketchup especially if the ketchup came from Whataburger. I respected this wonderful man for his faith, devotion to Mary, Chas and Michael Robert, his sisters, and neices and nephews. Both Michael Ryan and I loved and admired "Uncle Mike" and are grateful for the memories we shared over the years.

A week before Mike tragic accident, Mary, Robyn and I shared and enjoyable weekend with Mike as we celebrated his 56th birthday. I will never forget the sparkle in Mike's eyes and the smile on his face as he shared his joy of playing in a poker tournament with one of the "Big" well known players. Smiling from ear to ear he stated "I may not have won, but I know my skills are good enough to play with the professionals". When I think if Mike many memories and special thoughts come to mind. First his Faith, his love for Mary, the love for both Chas and Michael and his sisters "Big Sister", Frances and Robyn. The man who put ketchup on his ketchup was also known for his sense of humor and jokes. One Christmas he presented me with a special gift he selected just for me....a fake scratch off ticket. His laughter filled the room as I made countless efforts to scratch off the ticket before realizing the joke was on me. Over the years our families and friends shared countless memories and happy times. If I could give him a final gift it would be a deck of cards and a "Hershey" bar. May God bless Mary, the boys and his sisters during these difficult time. Mike was the brother I never had. Two songs come to mind "Gone To Soon" and "Wind Beneath my Wings". Both Michael Ryan and I loved him deeply and will miss him.
