I was thinking about you the other day and I log into my email and it showed where your guest book had been signed. I guess this was a sign for me to come over here and talk to you. I remember our jokes. I remember you trying not to laugh at mine but would burst out in laughter when you couldn't hold it in any longer. I remember when my mom passed and you were the only one who knew that I didn't want to talk. We talked about something else besides my mom. You were more than a colleague, you were a friend and a blessing. I miss you my friend but I do know you are in a better place. God's Love!

Terry left us a year ago, but he will never leave my heart. My Cousin Terry was more than just an Army hero, Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient from the Vietnam War, he was my personal hero.
Terry saved my life by catching me when I fell out of the ole apple tree in my Aunt Susie's front yard when I was eleven years old. Just before he left for Vietnam, he came home to visit my Aunt Susie, his maternal grandmother, “Mother” as she was called instead of Grandmother. We were sitting on the porch swing and Terry noticed a big red apple at the top of the ole apple tree and said, “I bet you can't get to that big red apple at the top!” and of course that is all he had to say because he knew I would do just about anything for him. Terry would joke and kid with me and ride me on the ‘scooter' whenever he came to visit.
So off I went, climbing all the way to the top and snatched that big ole apple, only to find that it was beginning to rot at the top. I threw the apple down to Terry and on my decent, I stepped on a limb that broke and I began to fall, scrapping my body as I fell through the tree limbs and then suddenly there was Terry! He had caught me with both arms holding me tight with tears flowing down his cheeks. “I've got you Idona, I won't let you fall!”
As I held onto Terry's neck and then looked back at the tree and just where I would have landed was a plow with tiller blades that would have impaled my body had Terry not reached out and caught me. Yes, I owe my life to my dear sweet cousin, Terry Gene Burns.

To put it simply, Terry was a good man. I worked closely with him for over twenty years and I respected and appreciated him for the entire time. There was not much that I could ask him and he didn't know the answer or find the answer. He was truly my rock when it came to data mining. To Terry's family, I can only imagine the depth of loss that you are feeling at this time. My thoughts and prayers will remain with you always.

I went to Oakhaven with Terry, Larry and Linda. I have so many memories of Terry being the hall monitor and rushing me to class, playing on the football team and just knowing him. He was a really wonderful person in HS and from the comments I am sure he continue that as an adult. I appreciate his service to our country. Know I am praying for you and your family. Terry was truly the most honorable and decent man I have ever known. If half the people in the world were half a decent as Terry, there would be no problems.

I was so sad to hear about Terry. I have known him 20+ years and worked most of those years with him at State Tech/Southwest. Though he never talked about it, I was not surprised to read here that he was a war hero. I suspected as much because he always went above and beyond the call of duty at work also. He was fiercely loyal and supportive of his colleagues and kind to everyone, and always the southern gentleman. Everybody loved Terry. He will be long remembered and missed by many.

Over the past 20+ years I considered Terry's friendship a gift and a blessing. Working with Terry, I recognized he had a gift for thinking outside the box and empowering other team members to do the same. There was no limit to what goals could be accomplished with Terry on your team. Terry left an indelible memory of happiness, caring and thoughtfullness with all those who knew him.

Terry was one of the kindest, most understanding, and most helpful colleagues at State Tech. May God have mercy on him and bless his family.

Terry was one of my very closest Cousins since we were only 2 months apart in age. Close enough to become "Best Man" at Mary and my wedding in 1975. Even though we lived in different states, we always saw each other in Waverly during the summer. We camped, rode the scooter, went swimming in Blue Creek, tried to ride our Grandmothers cow, worked for Uncle Dan'l for a lot less than minimum wage, and got into a lot of innocent mischief.
Most people do not know that Terry was a genuine Army hero, being awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart in Vietnam after volunteering for a mission that cost him his arm. The others on the mission were killed.
I never saw Terry have a down day. He brightened everyone's life when he was around.
I am going to miss him terribly and will think of him fondly forever.
