Born Tillie Chazen on May 10, 1918 in Akron, Ohio, Thelma was raised in Beaumont, attending college and meeting Henry, who she would later marry in New York, where she relocated after her father's passing. Returning to Henry's native Houston, they raised three children and built their family business. Thelma and Henry were married for 39 years until Henry's passing in 1979.
Thelma loved to travel and to fish with her family. She also enjoyed spending time with friends, playing cards and knitting hats and blankets for babies at MD Anderson. She was a member of Congregation Beth Yeshurun and spent her retirement years at West Brae Court, sharing her love of knitting, bingo and mahjong with others.
More than anything else, Thelma loved being with her family. She is survived by her three children, Louis Atlas and his wife Sue, Marian Hecker and her husband Don, and William Atlas and his wife Sally; grandchildren Stacey Lanza, Shari Sanders and her husband Justin, Todd Atlas and his wife Jeremy, Michael Hecker, Chad Atlas and his wife Katy, and Jennifer Atlas; and great-grandchildren Jacob and Sydney Sanders, and Evan Atlas.
A graveside service will be held at Beth Yeshurun Cemetery at Post Oak Road Wednesday March 13th at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Texas Heart Institute in Houston.
