Thelma Ann Shippentower, "Unuit Ithla" went to be with her Creator and the family she missed so dearly. She was born on August 23, 1955 to Clyde Shippentower and Lucy George. She was a member of the Yakama Nation. In her early years she lived in Lone Pine McKinley Indian Mission and attended the Petersburg Elementary and Watonka High School in the Dalles, OR. She was married to Stanley D. Miller for twenty one years and still remained close friends. Thelma and Stan raised her sister's children as their own and other children in need of a loving family. Thelma Ann Shippentower, "Unuit Ithla" went to be with her Creator and the family she missed so dearly. She was born on August 23, 1955 to Clyde Shippentower and Lucy George. She was a member of the Yakama Nation.
In her early years she lived in Lone Pine McKinley Indian Mission and attended the Petersburg Elementary and Watonka High School in the Dalles, OR. She was married to Stanley D. Miller for twenty one years and still remained close friends. Thelma and Stan raised her sister's children as their own and other children in need of a loving family. When she was younger she was a member of 1910 Shaker Church.
Thelma was a longtime cook and member of the Toppenish Longhouse. She loved to be in the kitchen and to cook for the people especially traditional native dishes. In addition, she also worked at the Yakama Nation Housing Authority. In her spare time she loved to fish, go to the casino, go to yard sales, thrift shop, and go to concerts. Thelma was an avid beadworker and seamtress, collected hummingbirds and cow figurines. For many years she was the Royality Coordinator for the Washington Birthday Celebration.
Every year she looked forward to watching her children and grandchildren dance at Pow Wows. Sometime, she would dress up and participate with them. The Pendelton Round-up was one of her favorite events.
She is survived by her only daughter Katrina (Richard) Miller-Walsey. Her other special children daughters Ida (Myron) Shock and Chantel Peters; sons Clyde Shippentower, Tillian "Bubba" Gonzales, and Andrew George; sisters Marlene McCloud and Wanda George; special cousins Doris Shippentower Strong, Velma Manuel, and Allison Gardee; grandchildren Heaven Walsey, Gerra Shock, Skyy Sutterlict, Zemara Gonzales, Fearius Gonzales, Mason George, Jodawn and Victoria Hart, Charles Selam Jr., and Ashley Walsey; aunts Josphine George, Vivian George, Mavis Kindness, Ila George, Louella George, Janice Everybodytalksabout; special nieces Celeste McCloud, Kelly McCloud, Lucy George, Savannah George, Agnes Anderson, Samantha Olney, Rose Olney; nephews Adrian Strong, Victor Strong, Mackinley Lee; uncle Sam Jim Sr.; and special nephew Glenn Thompson III.
Thelma was preceded in death by her father Clyde Shippentower, her mother Lucy George Lewis, brother Anderson Shippentower, sister Elsie Shippentower, nephews Preston Polk and Ambruce George, and grandson Daniel Ezliel. Also preceding her in death were all her grandparents.




A Dressing Service will be held Monday, February 27th at Merritt Funeral Home beginning at 1:00 p.m.
An Overnight Service will be held at the Toppenish Longhouse in Toppenish with a sunrise burial following at the Pine Creek Cemetery in Roosevelt, WA
