Thomas "Tom" ARMSTRONG
Thomas "Tom" Armstrong, age 68 years of 421 Atwood Ave, Rainy River, Ontario, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2011 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
He was born on July 30, 1943 in Inverness, Scotland to the late Bernard and Mary Armstrong. At the age of three, Tom with his parents immigrated to Canada and settled in Fort Frances, Ontario where Tom spent his early years growing up. He later moved to Atikokan and lived at Camp 113 while working in the bush for Ontario, Minnesota Pulp and Paper. On November 30, 1968, Tom was united in marriage to the former Elaine Vinkle. They soon had two sons, and moved to Alberta where Tom worked as a coal miner, and had also farmed for several years. While living in Alberta, they had their third son. The family lived in Alberta until his retirement at which time they moved to Rainy River where they resided since. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting. At home Tom enjoyed gardening and was known for his cooking. Tom and Elaine loved travelling many times to Alberta to visit their sons and watch them play sports. As an animal lover, Tom also had dogs that were all named Sparky. He will be dearly missed and loved by his family and many friends.
He was predeceased by his two brothers, John and Kelly Armstrong; and brother-in-law, Tom Bruyere.
Tom is survived by his wife, Elaine Armstrong of Rainy River, ON.; three sons, Kelly and wife Deserie of Rimbey, AB., Bradley and Jennifer Persson, and Ryan all of Edson, AB. He is also survived by three sisters, Dorothy and husband Mack Usipuik of Prince George, B.C., Ann Bruyere of Fort Frances, ON., and Donna and husband Norman Jewett of Rainy River, ON., six brothers, Richard Armstrong, and Michael Armstrong and wife Nancy all of Prince George, B.C. , Alvin Armstrong of B.C., Robert Armstrong and wife Ursula of Hinton, AB., Vincent Armstrong of Atikokan, ON., and Francis Armstrong and wife Edith of Kingston, ON; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
A memorial service to celebrate Tom's life will be held on Friday, September 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Rainy River, Ontario. Father Alan Albao will officiate with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River, Ontario.
Honourary pallbearers will be Richard Armstrong, Michael Armstrong, Alvin Armstrong, Robert Armstrong, Vincent Armstrong, Francis Armstrong, Norman Jewett, Dan Furyk and Les Abraham.
