Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Robert Ball, Jr., 62, of Arlington, Virginia went to be with the Lord he so dearly loved early in the morning on Friday, July 18th after taking a late-night walk on Thursday with his furry friends Tark and Ruckus. Tom was born in Montclair, New Jersey to the late Thomas Robert Ball, Sr. and Jean Mary Stokley Ball on June 30, 1952. He was their second child and first son.

Tom graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas, Virginia in 1970 and received a bachelor of arts in Philosophy (of which he often and quite fondly reminded his engineer colleagues) from the University of Virginia in 1974. He was married to the love of his life Kirsten Van Steenburg on May 31, 1975.

It would probably come as a surprise to many who knew Tom later in life that he was the smallest of Tom and Jean's babies. And he was no stranger to the inside of an ambulance. At age 10, he was rushed to the hospital where doctors performed an emergency tracheotomy and last rites were administered twice. As a teenager, he dove into a lake, collided with a submerged branch, and ended up with 17 stitches in his head. He also had to be med-evac'd from a Boy Scouts winter camping trip due to pneumonia. And he graduated from college a bit later than planned due to a bout with mononucleosis.

In his later years, Tom was known for his bigger-than-life, sometimes in-your-face personality; his genuine warmth; and the twinkle in his eye. When he attended a sister's Christmas party one year, her grandson truly believed that Santa Claus had made a special appearance in his street clothes.

Tom was employed by PEPCo as a Manager of Capital Budget Coordination. He was with PEPCo for 33 years and was planning to retire to the countryside in Pennsylvania in the coming year. He had visions of enjoying a full-time position as a gardening grandfather.

Tom had six children and ten grandchildren. He is survived by daughter Rachel, son-in-law Theodore Hubbell, and their four children Anna, Nathaniel, Samuel, and Nora; daughter Elizabeth, son-in-law Michael Sewell, and their five children Rebekah, Lydia, Meghan, Elise, and Bryan; son Benjamin Ball and daughter-in-law Shelisa; son Aaron Ball; daughter Hannah Ball; and daughter Madeleine Ball. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Abigail Sewell.

Tom was one of seven children. He is survived by sister Linda and brother-in-law Robert Newlon, sister Karen and brother-in-law Michael Bobbitt, sister Jeanne and brother-in-law Harry Foster, his only brother Douglas Ball and sister-in-law Sherrie, and sister Mary and brother-in-law Charles Bass. He was preceded in death by his sister Catherine Ball.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held in the church where, for over 30 years, he prayed, sang, mentored, learned, served, and made many wonderful friends. The service, followed by a reception, is at 10:30 a.m., July 29 at Truro Anglican Church, 10520 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22030.

Friends and family are encouraged to write down a favorite story about Tom and bring it to the service. If you are unable to attend, please send your story to Tom's daughter Elizabeth Sewell through email or facebook.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sanctity of Life Ministries, 10380 Democracy Lane, Fairfax, VA 22030.

Arrangements under the direction of Murphy Funeral Homes, Arlington, VA.
