He Only Takes The Best
God saw he was getting tired a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around him and whispered "Come with Me" With tearful eyes we watched him suffer, and saw him fade away Although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hand to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

Dear Betty and Tom's girls,
I was so saddened to hear of Tom's death, especially on the day that my Tom was buried at Arlington. Let's hope they had a joyful reunion up in Heaven.
I met your Tom in 1954, when I went on a blind date with my Tom. They were roommates at West Point and had completed their plebe year. One of my high school friends ( I was about to graduate) joined us and we attended a lacrosse game in Long Island, a sport I had never heard of, but Tom Dayton played. Saw a lot of both Tom's over the next few years and your Tom was an usher in our wedding. Since our guys went different ways ( Air Force and Army), we didn't see much of one another over the years, although I believe the two men reunited while both were stationed in Thailand. We have kept in touch in retirement and enjoyed visits when Tom visited here in VA and also saw each other at reunions. It has been such a pleasure to get to know Betty. We missed the wedding, which we had planned to attend, as I had a "knee" mishap and Tom didn't want to leave me. Both of us felt badly about that.
I will not be able to attend services, due to a new health problem for me. My son, who lives with me, is also having some difficulties. My thoughts and prayers will be with you all.

Dearest Betty and Tom's Children,
There are no words to express my deepest sympathy for the loss of Tom. I always held in him the highest regard and knew him to be the consummate gentleman. As a fellow warrior, aviator, and brother in arms, I am deeply saddened, but I am so richly rewarded by the fact that he also called me "a friend". Always gracious, outgoing, with truly heart felt warmth he made all who knew him at ease. He was a true fighter pilot and may the winds be fair, the approach and landing smooth, and may the good Lord Bless this aviator and those he loved always. God speed Tommy ----- ---

Dear Betty, you know how much we love you. Four years ago when we moved next door, we never would have thought we would have such great friends as we have with you and Tom. Tom always poured the wine and you always made the best dinners ever. We consider ourselves fortunate to know you and Tom. We love you both so much. Love always Linda and Lincoln

Thank you for sharing the wonderful pictures. I worked with Tom everyday at Carolyn's salon for a few years when he lived in New Braunfels. He was an amazing man and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to know him. RIP Mr. Dayton

Betty, I was just with my Dad, Bob Chamberlin, and read to him the loving tribute prepared by Tom's children honoring their father and your marriage to Tom. We send our deepest sympathies and wish we were there to return the wonderful comfort that you and Tom gave to Bob and our family last December when Mary passed away.
My parents valued your friendship and I enjoyed hearing my Dad reminisce about you and Tom.
