Obituary

Dr. Thomas Kenneth Lagow, Jr., age 79 of Rome, GA, died at a local hospital Wednesday June 17, 2014. Dr. Lagow was born March 30, 1935 in Waco, Texas, son of Thomas Kenneth Lagow, Sr. and Lucille Leatherwood Lagow. He was educated in the Dallas, Texas public schools and attended Rice University and Baylor University where he received a BA in history. He also attended Southern Methodist University, receiving a MA in history, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, receiving a BD and The University of Georgia, receiving a PhD in history. Dr. Thomas Kenneth Lagow, Jr., age 79 of Rome, GA, died at a local hospital Wednesday June 17, 2014.

Dr. Lagow was born March 30, 1935 in Waco, Texas, son of Thomas Kenneth Lagow, Sr. and Lucille Leatherwood Lagow. He was educated in the Dallas, Texas public schools and attended Rice University and Baylor University where he received a BA in history. He also attended Southern Methodist University, receiving a MA in history, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, receiving a BD and The University of Georgia, receiving a PhD in history. Dr. Lagow taught at North Carolina State University before coming to Rome in 1961 to become a Professor of History at Shorter College. He retired from Shorter in 2005.

Dr. Lagow was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rome where he served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Church Historian. He was a member of the Georgia Baptist Historical Society, Pi Gamma Mu Social Science Honorary Society and advisor for Phi Delta Tau fraternity at Shorter College. He also served on the Georgia Baptist Historical Commission and Georgia Council for Teacher Education. Dr. Lagow was devoted to both First Baptist Church and Shorter College. He also enjoyed gardening.

Dr. Lagow was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Glenn Cox Lagow to whom he was married on August 10, 1957. Survivors include daughters, Karen Lagow of Rome and Laura Lagow Leathrum and her husband, Thomas Edward Leathrum of Jacksonville, AL, and grandchildren Erin Marie Leathrum and Scott Thomas Leathrum.

Funeral services for Dr. Lagow were held on Monday, June 23, 2014, at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Rome. The family received friends Monday from 1 pm until the funeral hour at the church. Interment followed in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
