Obituary

Thomas A. Schleigh, Sr. US Army retired, entered the kingdom of the Lord the early morning hours of May 9, 2013. He was born in Hagerstown, MD on September 20, 1930. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Soon Hi (Cho/Teresa); son, Thomas Jr and his wife, Doris, grandsons, Kyle, Michael and Nicholas; daughter, Linda S. O'Connor, granddaughters Lane and Dana; brother, Robert and sister, Kathleen Gossard of Hagerstown, MD, along with nieces and nephews. Thomas A. Schleigh, Sr. US Army retired, entered the kingdom of the Lord the early morning hours of May 9, 2013. He was born in Hagerstown, MD on September 20, 1930. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Soon Hi (Cho/Teresa); son, Thomas Jr and his wife, Doris, grandsons, Kyle, Michael and Nicholas; daughter, Linda S. O'Connor, granddaughters Lane and Dana; brother, Robert and sister, Kathleen Gossard of Hagerstown, MD, along with nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Catharine and brothers, Charles and Richard. Tom was a wonderful, dedicated husband and a warm loving father with a beautiful smile and great sense of humor. In addition to loving his family, he loved the Boston Red Sox, Washington Redskins and enjoyed rooting on the San Antonio Spurs. He was an avid reader and active volunteer with St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Tom was also beloved by the San Antonio Korean Community for his generosity, friendship and support. Thomas A. Schleigh enlisted in the US Army on September 26, 1949. He had basic training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. In March of 1950 he was sent to Whittier, Alaska. Tom returned from Alaska in October 1951 and was discharged in December 1952. He reentered the US Army in March 1953 and remained in service for 30 years. Tom was assigned to Ft. Eustis, VA, Camp Leroy Johnson, LA, Ernest Harmon AFB Newfoundland Goosebay Labrador, Ft. Holabird, MD, Korea (3 tours), Ft. Meade, MD, Okinawa (2 tours) Vietnam, Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX. He retired in 1979 where he was assigned as the DPCA SGM, Ft. Sam Houston, TX. A military career spanning 30 years, SGM Schleigh was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal (9th Award), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm and many letters of commendation. Upon retirement Tom attended college and earned an Associate Degree with honors, in accounting. Tom was loved by many and will be missed tremendously. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 13, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, with a rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 4411 Moana. Interment of ashes, with full military honors will be at a later date at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. To sign the online guestbook, go to www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com.
