Tom was the loving husband of Gladys for 58 years. He is survived by his children; Sheri (Roger) VanKampen, Lauri (Ted) Bauman, Richard (Diane), Nanci (Ron) Amat and Steve (Melissa) and 10 grandchildren; Erin, Justin, Alan, Haley, Brandon, Mallory, Kelly, Brianna, Leo and Sofia.

Tom was born to Livingston and Mary Smith in Detroit, MI. He grew up in the city where his father ran a pharmacy and soda fountain. After graduating from MacKenzie high school, Tom attended Michigan State University where his met his love Gladys. They married during a blizzard in March 1955 with Tom in his Air Force dress uniform and Gladys in a suit she had made in a color to match. From there they went on to have many adventures including raising their first four kids while Tom worked hard to finish his degree at Lawrence Tech.

Tom loved spending time with his family and being with his grandchildren. He always made time to attend the multitude of games, concerts, plays and other events that come along with having 10 grandkids. He enjoyed watching sports (especially Michigan State!), playing the lottery, gardening, taking care of his cats, and working on the daily crossword puzzle to keep his mind sharp. Tom had a talent for writing poetry, and also played a pretty mean game of pool. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He served in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956 and was stationed in Saudi Arabia for a year. He worked for many years at Parke-Davis in downtown Detroit, and retired (finally!) from his position as a systems analyst at Fiserv, Inc. in 2008.

Most of all, Tom was deeply loved as a husband, dad, grandpa, and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will take place at Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Rd. Livonia, MI 48152 on Wed. May 22 from 4-8. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Thur, May 23 at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Foundation.
