Thomas Welch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 6, 2012.

Welch, Thomas Allen, 77, a long time resident of Sudbury died on October 5, 2012. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Charlene, of 51 years. Born in Arlington, MA, he was the son of the late Leonard and Helen Welch, the brother of Leonard Walsh and wife Keiko of Torrance, CA, and the brother of Colleen Kirwan and her late husband James of Santa Clarita, CA.

Thomas is also survived by his seven children; Monica Hanlon and her husband Terrance of Chester, NH, T.C. Welch and his wife Margo of Hopkinton, MA, Diana Welch of Boxborough, MA, Stephanie Scordino and her husband Joseph of Alpharetta, GA, John Welch of Marlborough, MA, Donna Ferrara and her husband Joseph of Winthrop, MA, and Marcia Wallace and her husband Aaron of Plymouth, MA. He also leaves 23 grandchildren and numerous nieces, grandnieces, nephews, and grandnephews.

After graduating from Arlington High School, Tom was stationed in Germany while serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He went on to graduate with honors from Boston College School of Management in 1961, received his MBA from University of Pittsburgh in 1962, and completed his Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School in 1966. Thomas began his career working at Gillette and other businesses in the Boston area. In 1969 he formed his own personnel consulting firm and in 1976 stepped in as Executive Director at M.O.I.S. in Natick. Founding SMS in 1980, he developed a successful national computer maintenance corporation eventually spreading across the United States in 25 offices. He retired in January of 2006.

Tom was active in the community serving on the Minuteman Voc Tech High School Committee and coached youth hockey for many years. He was a member of the Sudbury Minutemen, and enjoyed camaraderie with friends on the Old Timers Softball and Hockey teams in Sudbury. Thomas was a man of deep faith and enjoyed pilgrimages to many holy sites. A quiet benefactor of many, his works included the building of St. Francis Girl's Secondary School in Kiptere, Kenya, the missions of the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Mercy in Plock, Poland, and the development of The Way of the Cross at the National Shrine of Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA. Tom's greatest joy in life was spending time with his bountiful family.

Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Rd., Rt. 20, Sudbury, at 9 a.m. on Wed., Oct. 10, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 160 Concord Rd., Sudbury, MA. I worked at SMS for 10 years, starting out in Berlin, MA and ending in Littleton, MA and had the upmost respect for him. I was saddened to hear that he had passed away without me being able to see him again. I moved to California to be near my family 12 years ago and often thought about how much he taught me during the years I worked at SMS. I will never forget him. My deepest condolences to the Welch Family. Sincerely, Mary Lou
