Tom S. Douros (Athanasios), 86, went to be with the Lord on July 20, 2013 peacefully at home. Tom was a native of Norfolk and was born on July 12, 1927. He was a graduate of Maury High School (class of 1946), The Ewell Conservatory of Music (in 1949), and Bob Jones University (class of 1955). He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alice; his 7 children, Bob, Cindy Jarvis, Jim, Tim, Mary Musaus, Melody Black, and Tommy; 16 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. His first born, Steve, was a Norfolk Police Officer, killed in the line of duty in 1980.

Tom founded the Community Church of Norfolk in 1958 and continued as pastor until health issues force him to retire in 2012. He was an accomplished musician, composer and known for his "Twin Towers" and "Seven Trumpets of Revelation" concertos and other sacred compositions. He also loved gardening and sharing his peaches and figs from his trees with everyone.
He had a love for people beyond compare and was known for his steadfast faith in God and sharing it with others.
Tom Douros was a teacher, pianist, and pastor, who was loved and admired by many.

The family will be having a visitation on Wednesday, July 24th from 6 to 8pm at Smith & Williams Funeral Home in Norfolk on Norview Ave. The funeral will be held Thursday, July 25th at 2:00 pm at the funeral home, followed by a graveside service at Forest Lawn Cemetery and reception at Community Church of Norfolk. While serving in the Navy, back in 2004/05, I met Tom and his wife Alice while attending church services with my girlfriend at the time. While I was not a Christian, I did enjoy the services.

In September of 2017, I began converting to Christianity after opening my mind and having a spiritual experience that I could not deny.

Recently, I was sorting through some old "keepsakes" and found a Christmas card from Tom & Alice Douros among my "Navy-era" stuff.

So I wanted to reach out to let him, let them both, know that the seed they planted had grown. It may have taken nearly two decades, but it is now about to bear fruit. I'll be baptized in just over two weeks.

Thank you Pastor Tom, may your memory be eternal.

I think about you daily and Im so thankful for all the memories we have made. Everytime I see the sun rays shining thru the clouds, I think of you because that day we were looking at the clouds together, and you said those clouds always reminded you of the Lords Love shining down on us.... Well now everytime I look at the sun rays shining thru the clouds, I think of YOUR love you have for all of us, and it makes me think that its your way of saying, Hello My Little Doling while you do your famous wave. "...be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life."
(Revelation 2: 10)

This reminds me exactly of Papou. I am so thankful for all the years we had with him, to listen to his jokes and to spend quality time with him when Gabriel and I visited and enjoyed Sunday lunch together.

You will always be loved and your legacy will live on.

I was a classmate of Tommy Douros at Bethany Christian School. I wish to offer my condolences to him and his family.

I attended Bethany Christian School, from 1977 to 1983, 2nd to 7th grade, as a classmate of Tommy Douros. I lived with my grandparents, Walter and Irene Sterling, who were not churchgoers, and I was welcomed into Pastor Douros' church which I attended for some of those years. The Douros home was one I spent many hours at -- or near, as we were usually riding our bikes, or playing ball. He was a wonderful pastor and family man, full of the faith whose seeds he planted for so many years. I love the film "the apostle", and when they have the exchange -- "What you see is what we got -- what we got, the Lord sent" -- I think of Pastor Douros and his "little church in the wildwood." I am sorry I did not keep in touch with Tommy and the family, after moving away in 1984. I visited the church once, to a warm embrace from Pastor Douros, in 1993 when I graduated from college. I have nothing but fond memories of him and of my old childhood friend Tommy. God bless Pastor Douros and his family. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

He is an amazing person. His drive for the the Lord was unshakable. I am proud to say he was my family's pastor for 30 years. We will always remember him for the strong Christian leader he was. He was always positive and his faith never faltered. His passion was admirable to say the least. I am glad that the Lord brought him into our lives, He was called home after an amazing time here. He touched our lives. Thank you pastor Tom Douros. We are sad to see you go, but we will all be reunited in the kingdom of our Lord...

The Glover Family wishes you all peace during this most difficult of times.
I loved to see Mr. Douros' car coming down the street since he would never pass you by without stopping, winding down the window and saying "God bless you".
My brother, Glen and I attended Bethany Christian School with Melody & Tommy, so he was a fixture at basketball games, etc. Such JOY he carried, always smiling!
Can't help but think that the world is just a bit dimmer now with him not in it. :'( RIP!
Mrs. Douros, you will be heavy in my thoughts and prayers. You will be together again. Take comfort in that.

Doubt anyone remembers me but I met Mr.Douros back in the late 60s when he and his family moved on the corner of Spruce.St. He changed my life and helped me to give my life to Jesus. My life is different because he cared enough to take time to listen to a kid.
Thank you for being there for me.

Although I have only known Tom for about 3 years, it is apparent that he loved serving the Lord & putting Eternal concerns above Earthly matters.

In Ephesians it says, "By love, serve one another." Tom was the epitome of that & I have been honored to know him & to be part of his family.

One thing Tom & I had in common & shared is our enjoyment in analyzing the subject of History. And for all those Sunday lunch discussions, I will forever be grateful for those lasting memories & learning experiences.

It was always a pleasure to have Mr. Douros visit He would enjoy a glass of ice tea and speak the wondeful word of god. Mr. Douros certainly left some fond memories behind, and many of us learned a lot from him. We are all very sad to see Mr. Douros Pass, Jonathan is deeply upset to hear the bad news of his grandfather passing. We all need to check in on Alice from time to time.

Mr. Douros was not only a pastor, composer, and teacher. He was also a true man of God. He was a very warm, caring, genuine, loving person. He loved and welcomed you to this church, regardless of race, or religious background. He also brought my parents to the Lord, many years ago. I loved him like a 2nd father. I had the wonderful opportunity to grow up with his children, and spend time getting to know him as well. I will truly miss this wonderful, and caring true warrior of Christ. Working for the Lord was truly his first love. I look forward to seeing him again one day.

Tom was a man who was both passionate in his love for Jesus and for those whom he loved and faithfully served during his earthly pilgrimage. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Alice and a loving "Dad" to their children and grandchildren of whom he was so proud. His race is run and he has finished his course, now he rests in the presence of his dearly Beloved. Rest in peace, dear friend...R.I.P. We are thankful and count ourselves blessed that the Lord allowed him to be an important part of our early Christian life
