Obituary

Umesh C. Vasishth was born in Srinagar, India in 1930 to Ram Pratap and Shakuntla Vasishth. He passed away at St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia on December 28, 2012, having spent his last few days surrounded by family and friends. Umesh was married to Veena Lal for 52 years and shared the home he designed on Ken Lake since 1969. He is survived by his wife, Veena, his daughter Poonum, her husband Dwight Avery, son Neal, and grandchildren Quinci and Taran. Umesh C. Vasishth was born in Srinagar, India in 1930 to Ram Pratap
and Shakuntla Vasishth. He passed away at St. Peter's Hospital in
Olympia on December 28, 2012, having spent his last few days
surrounded by family and friends. Umesh was married to Veena Lal for
52 years and shared the home he designed on Ken Lake since 1969.
He is survived by his wife, Veena, his daughter Poonum, her husband
Dwight Avery, son Neal, and grandchildren Quinci and Taran.

Umesh came to Seattle in 1955 after completing Bachelor of Engineering
studies at the University of Mysore (India), and then earned his MS in
Structural Engineering from the University of Washington. After
graduation, Umesh joined the Washington State Department of
Transportation in Olympia as Supervising Bridge Engineer. He had
design responsibility for more than a hundred structures located throughout
Washington. Umesh taught an engineering class at Saint Martin's
College. Following retirement, Umesh founded Exeltech, an engineering
consulting firm which continues to thrive. He served as President of
the Structural Engineers Association, Consulting Civil Engineers of Washington and served on the
State's Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land
Surveyors. Umesh received numerous professional awards for his design
and engineering work and was honored to receive invitations to present papers at symposiums in Beijing, China and Nice, France.

Umesh enjoyed painting and was an avid reader. He was a pioneer in
many ways, from his decision to pursue his dreams in the United
States, to his sponsorship of others to come to America. He is fondly
remembered for his kindhearted nature, professional accomplishments
and the legacy he leaves through his family and the structures that
carry people daily.
