Jim was certainly one of my favorite relatives. He had a no-nonsense way of talking that I loved to listen to especially if talking about Czechoslovakia.
I do have a favorite story about him that I hope I am not too bold to share. In the early 1980's there was a large extended-family gathering (maybe a wedding reception?) at the ZCBJ Hall. After dinner, Jim invited John and I up to the bar with him. Being only 16 at the time, I considered this an honor and quickly got up and accepted his invitation. As the three of us approached the bar, Jim introduced himself to the bartender. Figuring that was the adult thing to do, John and I each introduced ourselves as well to the bartender using our deepest over 21 sounding voices. Then Jim added (as he ordered himself a drink) that us boys were 16 years old and would be drinking sodas that night. Well he set John and I up but it was for the best. It still makes me laugh and puts a smile on my face.
To the entire Kozumplik family, I offer my condolences and prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear about Jim and I didn't find out until today after the funeral. He was my dad's cousin and we visited them many times at their farm while I was growing up. I have fond memories of the family and Jim was always such a happy man. My thoughts and prayers go out to Josephine and the children. May God bless you all.

To the entire Kozumplik family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I knew Carla and there were many times I was invited into your home in the late 60's early 70's. I still remember the love and laughter present every time I was there.
The world has lost a wonderful man.

I knew this man as a great father to a great family. Jim always seemed to have a smile and I remember him as a hard working and honest man. His booming laugh could be heard across a large room.
Brian and I became close friends in the 3rd grade after I confessed to Father Jacobs that I had written Brian's initials on a school book. Father Jacobs suggested I ask Brian for forgiveness.
I found out shortly afterward that his dad took in my dad when my dad was left without parents at 15. So my dad grew up on the farm with Jim. It was pretty cool playing in the same barn as my dad and sleeping in the same bedroom when I spent the night.
I pray the divine comfort received by Jim's family outweighs the grief.
My dad was also 87 when he died a few years ago and I'm sure there heavenly reunion was filled with smiles and, if they get their way, polka music.
See you guys later.

In summer 1995 I moved from Michigan to Phoenix to go to school at Arizona State. I was 2000 miles from home, no car, no TV, just 2 suitcases full of clothes living in a dank little studio apartment with cinder block walls. Needless to say it was a big adjustment. The following Spring Uncle Jim and Aunt Josephine were in Arizona for a farm show, and they took the time to stop by and visit me. They took me out for a real meal (fried chicken I believe), and we went to a Cactus-league spring training game - Angels vs. A's. We had a great time - it was always a great time when Uncle Jim was around. I might as well have been spending the day with my own parents - they were so similar. This is one of my favorite memories from my time there.
