Vara Flowers Smith of Garner went home to be with her Lord Sunday February 19, 2012. She was born a twin in Archers Lodge, NC on 9/16/1920 to the late Patience Sellars Flowers and Captian Adams Flowers. She graduated from VA Medical College with a nursing degree. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Wallace Smith. She was on employee of Rex Hospital for over 30 years. She was a valuable member of Pilot Baptist Church in Raleigh for 60 years.

Vara was a minister of encouragement through cards, letters, phone calls and visits. She was a prayer warrior, encourager, lover of life and everyone in it. She began every day devoted to her Savior in whom she had faith to forgive her sins, redeem her and raise her up with Him according to His Word. She actively participated in every aspect of her life until her final breath. Her strength, found only in God, continues to be an inspiration to all.

Vara freely showed love to everyone. She was Mother and Granny to many more than her immediate family. God daily used the love of her brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, and her neighbors to return that love to her and enrich her life. Her children are very thankful to them.

She was preceded in death by her twin Arah as well as 3 other sisters and 2 brothers. She is survived by 1 son George Smith and wife Cindy of Rocky Mount, 3 daughters Donna Johnson and husband Glenn, Becky Leonard and husband Rev. Karl of Knightdale, Vida Hall and husband Rick of Raleigh, 2 brothers Charles Flowers, Dan Flowers and wife Doris, 3 sisters Argie Johnson, Mary Douglas, Jean Duke and husband John, 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and many loved cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.

A funeral service will be officiated by Rev. Karl Leonard at Pilot Baptist Church 1012 N Blount Street, Raleigh, Thursday February 23 at 1:00pm. Family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, Wednesday February 22 from 6:00- 8:00pm and other times at 1109 Northview St, Vara's home .
