Vernice "VJ" Joseph Roberts, Sr., 87, passed away Monday, June 19, 2017, at Mid Jefferson Extended Care Hospital in Nederland, Texas. He was born in Rayne, Louisiana to John Robert and Rita Thibodeaux Roberts on December 9, 1929.
A gathering of friends and family will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home in Port Arthur, Texas. A Celebration of Mr. Roberts' life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Mr. Roberts served in the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion Post #7. He was a postal carrier for 28 years for the United States Postal Service. "VJ the DJ" was a disc jockey for 11 years for KPNG Radio Station in Port Neches, a drummer in a Cajun band and a commercial shrimper.
Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his parents, John Robert and Rita Thibodeaux Roberts; his loving wife, Jacqueline Mary Roberts; daughter, Terrie Lynn Roberts; and eleven brothers and sisters, Rufus Robert, Howard Roberts, Irving Roberts, Jesse Roberts, Alton Roberts, Johnny Roberts, Murphy Robert, Dorothy Ortego, Ruth Noel, and Ronald Gene Robert. He is survived by his son, V. J. Roberts, Jr. and wife Joanie of Port Acres, Texas; daughters, Rita Jordan and husband Mike of Greenville, Texas; Laura Roberts of Port Arthur, Texas; brothers, Wilton Robert and wife Agnes and Wilbert Robert and wife Jeanette; and sister, Brenda Robert Boutte and husband Lucien; and his pet companion, "Scooter". Mr. Roberts also leaves behind 7 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren to cherish his memories.
