Funeral services for Mr. Vernon Ray Overturf, age 66 of Cullman, will be held on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Moss-Service Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Shedd Cemetery.

Mr. Overturf passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013 at his residence. He was born on January 22, 1947 in St. Louis Missouri to Vernon Edward and Georgia Mae Schottmueller Overturf. Vernon joined the U.S. Army in March of 1967, and became a helicopter pilot around January of 1969. He received orders to Vietnam, and flew combat missions until he was shot down under enemy fire, and thus received the Purple Heart. He was back flying ten days later, then in 1971 was stationed back in California, until he left active duty in Feb. 1972. Vernon immediately joined the National Guard, and continued flying until his retirement in 1989.
His is survived by his Wife: Valarie Anita Overturf of Cullman, Al., Daughter: Katheryn Overturf, Sister: Judy and John Campbell of Birmingham, Al., Brother: Wayne and Judy Overturf of Indianapolis, Indiana, Mother-In-Law: Viva Johnson of Cullman, Al., Brothers and Sisters-In-Law: Allan and Linda Johnson of Cullman, Charlotte Mackin of Smokerise, Al., Tippi and Tom Lawson of Huntsville, Al.,
The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, April 28, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
