MISRA, DR. VIJAY Dr. Vijay Misra died on Saturday, June 4th, 2011 at the age of 50. Dr. Misra was a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Adult Catheterization Laboratory at The University of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr. Misra came to pursue advanced medical training after finishing his medical schooling at Osmania University in Hyderabad India. He was the first physician in his family. He rose to his current position thus fulfilling the American dream. He did his training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the State University of New York at Stonybrook, where he was the Chief Resident and Fellow of the Year. He did advanced training in Interventional Cardiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee where he was an Assistant Professor and Director of Interventional Cardiology. For the past eight years he has been on faculty at the University of Alabama, here in Birmingham. During his academic career, Dr. Misra published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. He participated in many cutting edge clinical trials in Interventional Cardiology. He was a founding member of the Vulcan Interventional Cardiovascular Society of which he was the President in 2005. He was responsible for training fellows in Interventional Cardiology and took great pride and joy in his fellows. Opportunities to train with him were much sought after and he was always delighted to share his skills. Dr. Misra is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Misra; daughter, Drisana Misra, who is a junior at Yale University; son, Jivin Misra, who is a freshman at Northwestern University; and son, Hans Misra, a freshman at Indian Springs School. Despite a busy professional life, his wife, three children, extended family and friends, and his two dogs were at the heart of everything he did. His loss will be felt not only in Birmingham but also in the neighboring communities since his patients came from a wide geographic area. He was a humble, self sacrificing person who was always willing to help others. He had unique ways in finding humor in even the most difficult of circumstances. He was a loving father, devoted husband and a generous friend who will be missed dearly by all who knew him. He will remain in our hearts forever. A Memorial Service to celebrate Dr. Misra's life will be held in the Ireland Room at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Tuesday, June 7th, 2011.
