Violet Louise Brightbill Lechner is our hero. She passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014 in Spang Crest Manor, Lebanon. She was born on March 12, 1931, to Francis Merlin "Mike" and Anna Matilda (Rothermel) Brightbill.

Violet "Purp" was a proud and active member of the Class of 1949 at Lebanon High School. She worked at Bell Telephone after high school and always loved to socialize and dance. An event at Indiantown Gap led to meeting the love of her life, and she and Ernest were married after he returned from Korea.

Vi and Erny quickly had a family that included five children, all living in the Lechner home in Moodus, CT. Though many friends helped out, and her parents visited at least monthly, Vi eventually had to learn to drive to get around rural Connecticut and to visit Lebanon. She was soon driving all five kids in her station wagon to Central PA. When Erny died in 1967, Vi moved the family to Lebanon, raising her five children there. She worked for the Cornwall-Lebanon School District and Kapp Advertising. She cultivated many new and old friends throughout her life. She was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lebanon.

Violet was Gommy to her grandchildren. She loved attending her children's and granddaughters' activities, especially their musical ones. Her long time hobby of cross stitch lives on with the years of Christmas tree ornaments she made for them.

Violet is survived by her loving children: Jane Killian (Harry J.) of Camp Hill, Nancy Rank (Sam) of Lebanon, Ronald of Annville, Thomas (Tracy Beard) of Jonestown, and Judy Leggat (Dave) of Lebanon. Her much bragged about granddaughters carry her love for children and music: Meredith Killian Askey (Paul, Penelope), Hannah Killian, Katy Rank Lev (Corey, Miles, Felix), Betsy Rank (Steve Kralovich, Connor), Sami Rank (Richard Bravo, Ananda, Narayan), Adalia DiFabio, Frances DiFabio, Greer Leggat. Also remembering her with love are her brother Sam and Rowena Brightbill and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her sister Phyllis Yaklich, her parents, and her husband preceded her in death.

The family thanks her caregivers at Spang Crest and from Compassionate Care Hospice, who have supported Violet and her children in recent months.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 1-2 pm in the Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 723 Lehman St., Lebanon where her Memorial Service will begin at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 1513 Cedar Cliff Dr., Suite 100, Camp Hill, PA 17011 or Development & Disability Services of Lebanon Valley, 1126 Walnut St., Lebanon, PA 17042. The Rohland Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
