To the wife, children and family of Virendra,
Virendra and I were room-mates at 1826 D Street, Lincoln, NE during 1972-73. I was a new graduate student at UNL--just arrived from India and somewhat overwhelmed by the cultural changes. I met Virendra at a social function--he was going through a difficult period in his life. He was looking for a room mate, and I was looking for a room.
Though Virendra was just one year older than me, he became a "mentor" for me in many ways. He even taught me how to drive, in his white Oldsmobile Cutlass. For me he was a great friend.
When I was short of funds he allowed me to delay my rent payments and grocery bills. Almost every evening we would cook "kheema" (ground beef, spinach and spices) and eat it with rice. Our third room mate was Sastry Vemury. I have lost touch with him, as I had with Virendra.
In May 1973 I left Lincoln to go to Penn State to pursue a PhD. I had no money, and Virendra co-signed on a loan of $600 (a rather tidy sum then). Eventually, I repaid all my debt, but am ever thankful for Virendra's kindness.
He liked to smoke Benson and Hedges, Menthol. He would freely give me cigarettes (I could not then afford it). We had a habit of often going to the International House of Pancakes, late in the night.
To pay my bills I used to work as a dishwasher at Valentino's Pizza, near East Campus. Often my shift would end very late--past 2:00. I had no transport of my own. If I could not get a ride, Virendra was so gracious he would come and pick me up. Sometimes customers would order pizzas and not pick them up--so we, the "staff", could take the unclaimed pizzas home. Vinedra and I would eat pizza late in the night.
I have come a long way since 1973. Many good things have happened. I feel sorry I did not make more of an effort to reconnect with Virendra. My wife and I come to Omaha every year (from our home in Houston, Texas). I could have easily come and visited Lincoln--I feel sorry I did not.
Asha and Tamara-I have seen you as little girls when your father would sometimes bring you to our apartment on weekends. I am glad that each of you is settled in life and that Virendra has several grand-children.
I am deeply grieved to see the obituary of one of my earliest friends in the United States.
I hope I have not been too verbose. Just wanted to share with you how much I treasured your father's friendship.

Our prayers are with you and Virendra, Pam! Maria especially will stop me in the middle of the day and say, "Let's pray for Pam," then start right in with a Hail Mary. We will miss Virendra's great smile and laugh! May Mary be your comfort, especially this Holy Week. Love, Emily

Pam and family--my thoughts are with you. The world had lost an incredible man. I'll never forget him out in the snowstorm helping dig my partygoers cars out of the snow while wearing that beautiful vest he had on. I was more concerned about that vest getting ruined than the stuck cars, but not him! Peace to you.
