VIRGIL C. JACOBSEN West Des Moines Virgil Carl Jacobsen, 86, died at Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines on Saturday, February 16, 2013. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Luther Memorial Church with burial at Glendale Cemetery. He was born Nov. 17, 1926 in Nysted, NE to Willie and Esther (Jensen) Jacobsen. He married Alice Brokaw on August 17, 1947. To this union was born six children. Alice passed away in 1989. Virgil Carl Jacobsen, 86, died at Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines on Saturday, February 16, 2013. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Luther Memorial Church with burial at Glendale Cemetery.

He was born Nov. 17, 1926 in Nysted, NE to Willie and Esther (Jensen) Jacobsen. He married Alice Brokaw on August 17, 1947. To this union was born six children. Alice passed away in 1989.

Virgil was in the U.S. Army from 1952 to1953, where he served in Germany during the Korean War. They moved to Des Moines in 1955 where he worked at Colonial Bakery while attending Grand View College. He subsequently graduated from Drake University in 1959 with a BS in Business Administration. Virgil worked for 30 years with Continental Western Insurance Company where he retired in 1990.

He was very proud of his Danish heritage. He was a long time member of Luther Memorial Church and the Danish Lutheran Brotherhood in Des Moines. Following his retirement, he married Janice (Juel) Hansen in 1994. For several years, he worked part time at McLaren's Funeral Home. He enjoyed traveling and was widely known for his Danish rye bread. He particularly enjoyed making hundreds of loaves of bread for the Danish Brotherhood annual meeting and the annual church bake sale.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Alice. He is survived by his wife, Janice; children, Lowell (Donna) Jacobsen, Altoona, Diane (Dick) Stanton, Gilman City, MO, Mary (Adrian) Skytland, White Bear Lake, MN, Arla Jacobsen, Des Moines, Tina (Roy) Lee, Des Moines and Loren (Christy) Jacobsen, Johnston; step-children, Dan (Carol) Hansen, West Des Moines, Deb (James) Bieker, Elk Horn and Mark (Teri) Hansen, Urbandale; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren; brother, Bill (Virginia) Jacobsen, Des Moines and Allan (Blanche) Jacobsen, Audubon; and sister in law, Elva Rasmussen, Elk Horn.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at McLaren's Chapel in West Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be directed to Luther Memorial Church.
